في مشهد يرعب الكاريبي ويُنذر بكارثة وشيكة، اجتاح الإعصار «ميليسا» سواحل جامايكا بعنف، تاركاً وراءه ثلاث ضحايا ودماراً واسعاً، فيما يُتوقَّع أن يتسبب بفيضانات وانهيارات أرضية كارثية عند وصوله إلى اليابسة.
وتسبب الإعصار المصنف من الفئة الخامسة والأعلى على مقياس حدة الأعاصير والمصحوب برياح تصل سرعتها إلى 280 كيلومتراً في الساعة، بمقتل ثلاثة أشخاص آخرين في هايتي خلال الأيام الماضية وشخص واحد في جمهورية الدومينيكان.
وتوقع المركز الوطني الأمريكي للأعاصير أن يتسبب الإعصار بعواصف عاتية «مهددة للحياة» وفيضانات وأضرار جسيمة بمستوى دمار مشابه لما خلفه إعصارا «ماريا» عام 2017 و«كاترينا» عام 2005، و أن يكون الإعصار الأعنف في تاريخ جامايكا منذ بدء عمليات الرصد والتتبع المناخي في البلاد في حال لم تتراجع شدته.
وقال رئيس وزراء جامايكا أندرو هولنس، إنه لا يعتقد أن أي منشأة في المنطقة يمكنها الصمود أمام إعصار من الفئة الخامسة «لذلك قد تكون هناك أضرار جسيمة»، داعياً السكان إلى إخلاء المناطق الأكثر عرضة للخطر.
وبحسب رئيس الوزراء، هناك 881 ملجأ مفتوحاً لسكان الجزيرة البالغ عددهم 2.8 مليون نسمة، محذراً من أنّ الإعصار قد يحدث أضراراً جسيمة خصوصاً في غرب البلاد.

The hurricane, classified as a Category 5 and the highest on the hurricane intensity scale, accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 280 kilometers per hour, has resulted in the deaths of three more people in Haiti over the past few days and one person in the Dominican Republic.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center predicts that the hurricane will bring "life-threatening" severe storms, flooding, and significant damage at a level of destruction similar to that caused by Hurricanes "Maria" in 2017 and "Katrina" in 2005, and that it could be the most intense hurricane in Jamaica's history since the start of climate monitoring and tracking in the country, unless its intensity diminishes.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness stated that he does not believe any facility in the area can withstand a Category 5 hurricane, "so there may be severe damage," urging residents to evacuate the most at-risk areas.
According to the Prime Minister, there are 881 shelters open for the island's population of 2.8 million, warning that the hurricane could cause significant damage, especially in the western part of the country.
