في حادثة هزّت الرأي العام البريطاني وأثارت جدلاً واسعاً حول العزلة الرقمية، عُثر على جثة الشابة البريطانية شارلوت ليدر (23 عامًا) على سريرها بعد مرور نحو عام كامل على وفاتها، في شقتها بمدينة بولتون بمقاطعة مانشستر الكبرى.
المفاجأة الكبرى التي كشفتها التحقيقات كانت أن آخر محادثة أجرتها ليدر قبل وفاتها كانت مع برنامج الذكاء الاصطناعي (ChatGPT) الذي بدا أنه رفيقها الوحيد في أيامها الأخيرة.
ووفق تقرير شرطة مانشستر، تم العثور على الجثة في الـ6 من أغسطس الماضي أثناء فحص روتيني لشقتها بعدما فشل موظفو العقار في التواصل معها.
التحقيقات التي نُظرت أمام محكمة كورونر بولتون أظهرت أن الوفاة تعود إلى صيف عام 2024، إذ وُجدت أطعمة منتهية الصلاحية منذ يوليو من ذلك العام ورسائل بريدية متراكمة تشير إلى انقطاعها الكامل عن العالم الخارجي.
والبيانات الرقمية على حاسوبها الشخصي كشفت محادثة أخيرة بتاريخ 30 يوليو، كتبت فيها ليدر للذكاء الاصطناعي قائلة: «ساعدني، لقد ذهبت واشتريت طعاماً مرة أخرى». فأجابها البرنامج: «يبدو أنك تشعرين بتضارب بشأن تناول الطعام». لترد شارلوت بإحباط: «إنه طعام لم أكن أريده».
وقال المفتش بول كوين إن «تشات جي بي تي كان وسيلتها الوحيدة للتحدث، ولم تُسجل أي محادثات مع أشخاص حقيقيين»، مشيرًا إلى أن الشابة كانت منعزلة تماماً عن محيطها منذ عامين على الأقل.
وأكدت والدتها شانتاي سيم أن العائلة حاولت مرارًا التواصل معها منذ عام 2021 «لكنها انسحبت من الجميع ورفضت المساعدة».
وذكر القاضي المساعد ستيفن تيسدال أن ليدر كانت تعاني من اضطرابات نفسية ورفضت العلاج في عام 2022، ما أدى إلى «انسحابها من الحياة الاجتماعية بالكامل». وأضاف أن الشقة التي عُثر فيها على الجثة كانت نظيفة ومرتبة، ولا دلائل على الانتحار أو تعاطي مواد محظورة.
وأوضح الطبيب الشرعي أندرو كوتس أن الجثة كانت في حالة تحنيط طبيعي تشير إلى مرور نحو عام على الوفاة، ما دفع المحكمة إلى إصدار حكم مفتوح دون تحديد السبب الدقيق للوفاة.
ونعت عائلتها الراحلة بعبارات مؤثرة عبر مواقع التواصل قائلة: «كانت شارلوت روحًا طيبة، محبة للفن والموسيقى.. جميلة حتى في صمتها».
In an incident that shook British public opinion and sparked widespread debate about digital isolation, the body of young British woman Charlotte Leader (23 years old) was found on her bed nearly a full year after her death, in her apartment in Bolton, Greater Manchester.
The major surprise revealed by the investigations was that the last conversation Leader had before her death was with the artificial intelligence program (ChatGPT), which seemed to be her only companion in her final days.
According to a report from Manchester police, the body was discovered on August 6 of last year during a routine check of her apartment after property staff failed to communicate with her.
Investigations presented before the Bolton Coroner's Court showed that the death dated back to the summer of 2024, as expired food from July of that year was found and piles of mail indicated her complete withdrawal from the outside world.
The digital data on her personal computer revealed a final conversation dated July 30, in which Leader wrote to the AI saying, "Help me, I went and bought food again." The program replied, "It seems you are feeling conflicted about eating." Charlotte responded with frustration, "It's food I didn't want."
Inspector Paul Quinn stated that "ChatGPT was her only means of communication, and no conversations with real people were recorded," noting that the young woman had been completely isolated from her surroundings for at least two years.
Her mother, Chantelle Sim, confirmed that the family had repeatedly tried to reach out to her since 2021, "but she withdrew from everyone and refused help."
Assistant coroner Stephen Tisdale mentioned that Leader suffered from mental disorders and refused treatment in 2022, which led to her "complete withdrawal from social life." He added that the apartment where the body was found was clean and tidy, with no signs of suicide or drug use.
Forensic doctor Andrew Coates explained that the body was in a state of natural mummification indicating that about a year had passed since death, prompting the court to issue an open verdict without determining the exact cause of death.
Her family mourned the deceased with touching words on social media, saying: "Charlotte was a kind soul, loving art and music... beautiful even in her silence."
