تبدأ تايلند، اليوم الأحد، عامًا كاملًا من الحداد الرسمي على وفاة الملكة الأم سيريكيت كيتياكارا، «أم الأمة» ووالدة ملك البلاد ماها فاجيرالونغكورن، عن عمر ناهز 93 عاماً في المستشفى الملكي ببانكوك مساء الجمعة 24 أكتوبر، جراء عدوى دموية أصابتها في 17 أكتوبر.
حداد لمدة عام كامل
وفور وفاة الملكة الأم أعلن ملك تايلند دخول البلاد في حداد رسمي لمدة عام كامل على أفراد العائلة الملكية والخدم الملكيين، مع تنكيس الأعلام في جميع المؤسسات الحكومية لمدة 30 يوماً، وطلب من المواطنين ارتداء الثياب السوداء أو الألوان الداكنة كعلامة احترام، في تكرار للحداد الذي شهدته البلاد عند وفاة زوجها الملك بوميبول في 2016.
وفي بيان رسمي صادر عن مكتب البلاط الملكي، وُصفت الملكة سيريكيت بأنها «رمز الجمال والعطاء» التي رافقت زوجها لأكثر من ستة عقود في جولات تنموية غيرت حياة ملايين الريفيين، من خلال مشاريعها لدعم الحرف اليدوية التقليدية، مكافحة الفقر، وحماية الغابات والحياة البرية.
خسارة فادحة للبلاد
وقال رئيس الوزراء أنوتين تشارنفيراكول في اجتماع حكومي طارئ، «فقدنا أماً للأمة، التي كانت يدها اليمنى في بناء تايلند الحديثة»، مشيراً إلى أن الوفاة «خسارة فادحة للبلاد»، إذ ألغى تشارنفيراكول زيارته إلى قمة آسيان في ماليزيا حزناً، لكنه عدل عن قراره لاحقاً لتوقيع اتفاق وقف إطلاق نار مع كمبوديا، مع إجراءات أمنية مشددة في الشوارع.
وولدت الملكة سيريكيت، في عائلة أرستقراطية عام 1932 – العام الذي تحولت فيه تايلند إلى ملكية دستورية – التقت ببوميبول في باريس أثناء دراستها للموسيقى، وتزوجته عام 1950 في حفل أسطوري، وأنجبت أربعة أبناء، وأصبحت بعد تتويج ابنها في 2019 «الملكة الأم»، رغم انسحابها من الأضواء بعد سكتة دماغية في 2012.
وتحظى العائلة الملكية باحترام كبير في تايلند، إذ يُعتبر الملك أبًا للأمة ورمز المثال البوذي، وقد عُلقت صور مذهبة للملكة سيريكيت في الأماكن العامة والمنازل في مختلف أنحاء البلاد.
وسيُنقل جثمان الملكة السابقة بعد ظهر اليوم الأحد من مستشفى شولالونجكورن إلى القصر الملكي، حيث سيُحفظ في كنيسة صغيرة مهيبة لعام، حتى موعد مراسم حرق الجثمان.
Thailand begins today, Sunday, a full year of official mourning for the late Queen Mother Sirikit Kitiyakara, the "Mother of the Nation" and mother of the King Maha Vajiralongkorn, who passed away at the age of 93 in the royal hospital in Bangkok on the evening of Friday, October 24, due to a blood infection she contracted on October 17.
A Year of Mourning
Immediately following the death of the Queen Mother, the King of Thailand announced that the country would enter a year of official mourning for members of the royal family and royal servants, with flags at half-mast in all government institutions for 30 days, and citizens were asked to wear black or dark-colored clothing as a sign of respect, echoing the mourning the country experienced upon the death of her husband, King Bhumibol, in 2016.
In an official statement issued by the Royal Palace, Queen Sirikit was described as a "symbol of beauty and giving" who accompanied her husband for more than six decades on developmental tours that changed the lives of millions of rural people through her projects supporting traditional handicrafts, combating poverty, and protecting forests and wildlife.
A Great Loss for the Country
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated in an emergency government meeting, "We have lost a mother of the nation, who was the right hand in building modern Thailand," noting that her death is a "great loss for the country." Charnvirakul canceled his visit to the ASEAN summit in Malaysia in mourning but later reversed his decision to sign a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, with heightened security measures in the streets.
Queen Sirikit was born into an aristocratic family in 1932—the year Thailand became a constitutional monarchy—she met Bhumibol in Paris while studying music, and married him in 1950 in a legendary ceremony, giving birth to four children. After her son's coronation in 2019, she became the "Queen Mother," although she withdrew from the spotlight after suffering a stroke in 2012.
The royal family is held in great respect in Thailand, with the King regarded as the father of the nation and a symbol of the Buddhist ideal, and gilded images of Queen Sirikit have been hung in public places and homes across the country.
The body of the late queen will be transferred this afternoon, Sunday, from Chulalongkorn Hospital to the royal palace, where it will be kept in a small, majestic chapel for a year, until the cremation ceremony.
