After a dormancy that lasted nearly a century, the Kronotsky volcano in the Kamchatka Peninsula of eastern Russia erupted, releasing a giant ash column into the sky.

Unprecedented Height

On October 4, 2025, the volcano ejected an ash column that reached a height of 9.2 kilometers, with expectations that it could reach 15 kilometers at any moment.

Visual Observation Blocked

Thick clouds currently cover the volcano, preventing scientists from visually monitoring the scene, amid fears of a powerful explosive eruption.

Location and Massive Size

The volcano is located north of the eastern volcanic zone, 10 km from Kronotskoye Lake, and 225 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a base diameter of up to 16 kilometers.

Unique History and Composition

The last activity of the volcano was in 1922-1923, and it is covered by a layer of ice and old lava, making it one of the largest and most massive volcanoes in the area after accumulating eruption products over thousands of years.
