تعود الحادثة إلى 15 سبتمبر 2024 عندما رصد أحد عناصر الخدمة السرية روث مسلحاً قرب مضمار الغولف الخاص بترمب في فلوريدا. أطلق العنصر النار باتجاهه، قبل أن يفر روث بسيارة ويُلقى القبض عليه لاحقاً.
وخلال تفتيش مقر إقامته، عُثر على رسالة بخط يده كتب فيها: «كانت هذه محاولة لاغتيال دونالد ترمب، لكنني آسف جداً لأنني خذلتكم».

هذه ليست المرة الأولى التي ينجو فيها ترمب من محاولة اغتيال؛ ففي 13 يوليو 2024 أطلق توماس ماثيو كروكس (20 عاماً) النار خلال تجمع انتخابي بولاية بنسلفانيا، فأصيب ترمب إصابة طفيفة في أذنه وسط فوضى عارمة.

During a search of his residence, a handwritten note was found in which he wrote: "This was an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump, but I am very sorry that I let you down."
