رفعت الحكومة النيبالية اليوم (الثلاثاء) الحظر عن منصات التواصل الاجتماعي الكبرى، بعد أقل من أسبوع على تطبيقه، وذلك عقب احتجاجات دامية اجتاحت العاصمة كاتماندو وأدت إلى مقتل ما لا يقل عن 19 شخصاً وإصابة العشرات.
قانون مثير للجدل
اندلعت الاحتجاجات بسبب مشروع قانون حكومي يسعى إلى تنظيم وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي عبر إلزام الشركات العالمية مثل فيسبوك ويوتيوب وإنستغرام بالتسجيل الرسمي داخل نيبال، ثم امتدت إلى استياء من البطالة والفقر والفساد. واعتبر معارضو القانون أنه أداة للرقابة على حرية التعبير ومعاقبة المعارضين.
استقالة الوزراء
أعلنت الحكومة النيبالية اليوم (الثلاثاء) استقالة رئيس الوزراء ك.ب. شارما أولي وعدد من الوزراء، وخلال جلسة طارئة لمجلس الوزراء مساء أمس (الإثنين) أعلن وزير الداخلية راميش ليكهاك استقالته من منصبه بعد تصاعد الغضب الشعبي واستخدام الشرطة الرصاص الحي والغاز المسيل للدموع ضد المتظاهرين.
استهداف المنصات العالمية
كانت الحكومة قد حجبت نحو 26 شبكة اجتماعية لرفضها التسجيل رسمياً، من بينها فيسبوك وإكس (تويتر سابقاً) ويوتيوب. وفي المقابل، استجابت منصات أخرى مثل تيك توك وفايبر لمتطلبات التسجيل، وظلت تعمل بشكل طبيعي.
مستقبل غامض
ورغم رفع الحظر، لا يزال الجدل مستمراً حول مستقبل مشروع القانون، وسط مخاوف من عودة القيود إذا أصرت الحكومة على فرض سيطرتها على المنصات الرقمية الأكثر استخداماً في البلاد.
The Nepali government lifted the ban on major social media platforms today (Tuesday), less than a week after its implementation, following violent protests that swept the capital Kathmandu, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people and injuries to dozens.
Controversial Law
The protests erupted over a government bill aimed at regulating social media by requiring global companies like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram to register officially in Nepal. The unrest then extended to grievances over unemployment, poverty, and corruption. Opponents of the law viewed it as a tool for censorship of free speech and punishment of dissenters.
Ministerial Resignations
The Nepali government announced today (Tuesday) the resignation of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and several ministers. During an emergency cabinet session last night (Monday), Interior Minister Ramesh Lekhak announced his resignation following escalating public anger and the police's use of live ammunition and tear gas against protesters.
Targeting Global Platforms
The government had blocked around 26 social networks for refusing to register officially, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube. In contrast, other platforms like TikTok and Viber complied with the registration requirements and continued to operate normally.
Uncertain Future
Despite the lifting of the ban, the debate continues regarding the future of the bill, amid fears of a return to restrictions if the government insists on imposing control over the most widely used digital platforms in the country.
