أصدرت محكمة عليا في ولاية فيكتوريا الأسترالية، اليوم (الإثنين) حكماً بالسجن المؤبد على إيرين باترسون، بعد إدانتها بارتكاب جريمة هزّت الرأي العام، تمثلت في تسميم أربعة من أقارب زوجها السابق بوجبة غداء ممزوجة بفطر سام يُعرف باسم «قبعة الموت».
وقضت المحكمة بأن تقضي باترسون (33 عاماً) على الأقل خلف القضبان دون إفراج مشروط، بعد ثبوت مسؤوليتها عن مقتل دون وجيل باترسون وشقيقة جيل: هيذر ويلكينسون، إضافة إلى محاولتها قتل زوج الأخيرة إيان ويلكينسون الذي نجا بأعجوبة بعد أسابيع من العلاج المكثف.
وتعود تفاصيل القضية إلى تقديم المتهمة وجبة من فطائر «بيف ويلينغتون» خلال لقاء عائلي، تبيّن لاحقاً أنها احتوت على الفطر القاتل.
ووصف القاضي كريستوفر بيل الجريمة بأنها «خيانة هائلة للثقة»، مؤكداً أن بشاعتها جعلتها من أكثر القضايا إثارة للجدل في أستراليا خلال السنوات الأخيرة.
The Supreme Court in the Australian state of Victoria issued a life sentence today (Monday) for Erin Patterson, after she was convicted of committing a crime that shocked public opinion, which involved poisoning four relatives of her ex-husband with a lunch mixed with a toxic mushroom known as the "death cap."
The court ruled that Patterson (33 years old) must spend at least her sentence behind bars without parole, after establishing her responsibility for the deaths of Don and Gail Patterson and Gail's sister: Heather Wilkinson, in addition to her attempt to kill the latter's husband, Ian Wilkinson, who miraculously survived after weeks of intensive treatment.
The details of the case date back to the defendant serving a meal of "beef Wellington" during a family gathering, which later turned out to contain the deadly mushroom.
Judge Christopher Bell described the crime as a "massive betrayal of trust," emphasizing that its heinousness made it one of the most controversial cases in Australia in recent years.
