جاءت هذه المظاهرة بعد أن ألقت تهديدات ترمب بظلالها على احتفالات يوم الاستقلال المكسيكي، التي عادةً ما تكون صاخبة ومبهجة، إذ أعرب الرئيس الأمريكي عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي عن نيته تصعيد إجراءات تطبيق قوانين الهجرة.
ترمب: أحب رائحة الترحيل في الصباح
في منشور على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، استخدم ترمب صورة مستوحاة من فيلم Apocalypse Now، يظهر فيها كضابط عسكري أمريكي، وكتب تعليقاً يقول: «أحب رائحة الترحيل في الصباح»، مع صورة له بالزي العسكري على خلفية ألسنة اللهب وأفق شيكاغو، وأثارت هذه التصريحات استياء العديد من المتظاهرين الذين شعروا بأنها تستهدفهم شخصياً.
ترايسي كينونيز (50 عاماً)، إحدى المتظاهرات، تحدثت عن والدها الذي توفي أخيرا، والذي جاء إلى الولايات المتحدة كلاجئ من غواتيمالا. وقالت: «أنا هنا من أجله، ليس الأمر يتعلق بإخراج المجرمين من الشوارع، بل بتمزيق العائلات»، مُضيفة وهي تلوح بعلم مدينة شيكاغو: «لقد اختاروا المدينة الخطأ لاستهدافها».
المتظاهرون يعارضون تهديدات ترمب
كما عارض المتظاهرون تهديدات ترمب بنشر قوات الحرس الوطني لمكافحة الجريمة في شيكاغو، في خطوة قد تمثل محاولة غير مسبوقة لعسكرة ثالث أكبر مدينة في البلاد.
ومع ذلك، أشار نائب الرئيس جيه دي فانس يوم الأربعاء الماضي إلى عدم وجود خطط فورية لنشر الحرس الوطني في شيكاغو.
وفي سياق آخر، أثرت تهديدات الترحيل على الأجواء الاحتفالية في المدينة، حيث تحول موكب يوم الاستقلال المكسيكي في حي بيلسن المكسيكي التاريخي إلى حدث هادئ ومتوتر.

ووزّعت راقصات الفولكلوريكو، اللواتي تألقن بمجوهراتهن اللامعة وفساتينهن الملونة، منشورات «اعرف حقوقك» على حشود قليلة.
فيما ارتدى الفرسان المشاركون في الموكب صافرات برتقالية تحسباً لأي تدخل من وكلاء إدارة الهجرة والجمارك (ICE).
ولم ترد إدارة الهجرة والجمارك على طلبات التعليق حول ما إذا كانت قد أرسلت المزيد من الوكلاء إلى شيكاغو، بينما أشار السكان إلى عدم ملاحظتهم لأي تصعيد ملحوظ في إجراءات تطبيق قوانين الهجرة حتى الآن.

This demonstration came after Trump's threats cast a shadow over the typically lively and festive celebrations of Mexican Independence Day, as the U.S. president expressed via social media his intention to escalate immigration enforcement actions.
Trump: I love the smell of deportation in the morning
In a social media post, Trump used an image inspired by the film Apocalypse Now, depicting himself as an American military officer, and wrote a caption saying, "I love the smell of deportation in the morning," alongside a picture of him in military attire against a backdrop of flames and the Chicago skyline. These remarks sparked outrage among many protesters who felt they were being personally targeted.
Tracy Quinonez (50), one of the protesters, spoke about her father who recently passed away, having come to the United States as a refugee from Guatemala. She said, "I am here for him; it's not about getting criminals off the streets, but about tearing families apart," adding while waving a Chicago city flag, "They chose the wrong city to target."
Protesters oppose Trump's threats
The protesters also opposed Trump's threats to deploy National Guard troops to combat crime in Chicago, a move that could represent an unprecedented attempt to militarize the nation's third-largest city.
However, Vice President J.D. Vance indicated last Wednesday that there are no immediate plans to deploy the National Guard in Chicago.
In another context, the threats of deportation affected the celebratory atmosphere in the city, as the Mexican Independence Day parade in the historic Pilsen neighborhood turned into a quiet and tense event.

Folklorico dancers, adorned with their sparkling jewelry and colorful dresses, distributed "Know Your Rights" flyers to the sparse crowds.
Meanwhile, the riders participating in the parade wore orange whistles in anticipation of any intervention from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
ICE did not respond to requests for comment on whether it had sent more agents to Chicago, while residents noted that they had not observed any significant escalation in immigration enforcement actions so far.
