بعد 52 عاماً من الغياب، تمكنت السلطات الكندية من تحديد هوية إريك سينجر الرجل الذي اختفى عام 1973 في مدينة كليفلاند بولاية أوهايو الأمريكية، لتُسدل الستارة على لغز طال أمده وتُمنح أخواته الراحة أخيراً.
كان إريك سينجر يبلغ من العمر 22 عاماً وقت اختفائه، ويسلك دراجته في شوارع كليفلاند قبل أن يختفي عن الأنظار، تاركاً وراءه حقيبته وغيتاره وراتبه المستحق في المستشفى الذي كان يعمل به. وحاولت أسرته البحث عنه عبر التحقيقات الخاصة والتقارير الرسمية، لكن كل الجهود باءت بالفشل لعقود طويلة.
وجاء الحل بعد تطور كبير في تقنيات تحليل الحمض النووي (DNA)، إذ تمكنت السلطات في مقاطعة أونتاريو الكندية من الربط بين بقايا عُثر عليها في متنزه ألغونكوين منذ ثمانينيات وتسعينيات القرن الماضي، وبين أقاربه في الولايات المتحدة. وبعد سلسلة من المقارنات والاختبارات، تم التعرف على هوية إريك رسميًا في فبراير 2025.
وقالت أخته روث سينجر: «لقد منحتنا هذه المعرفة راحة كبيرة، وأكدت أنه لم يكن يعيش حياة سرية بعيدة عنا». تم حرق جثته واحتفاظ الأخوات بالرماد في منزل العائلة بولاية أوهايو، مع الوقت الكافي للتفكير في مكان توزيعه مستقبلاً.
يذكر أن إريك كان موسيقياً موهوباً، سافر بين القارات، وكان لديه ما يُعتقد من سمات عقلية فريدة ساعدته أحيانًا على التكيف مع التحديات، وفقاً لأخواته.
After 52 years of absence, Canadian authorities were able to identify Eric Singer, the man who disappeared in 1973 in Cleveland, Ohio, bringing closure to a long-standing mystery and finally granting his sisters some peace.
Eric Singer was 22 years old at the time of his disappearance, riding his bike through the streets of Cleveland before vanishing, leaving behind his bag, guitar, and unpaid salary from the hospital where he worked. His family tried to search for him through private investigations and official reports, but all efforts failed for decades.
The solution came after a significant advancement in DNA analysis techniques, as authorities in Ontario, Canada, were able to link remains found in Algonquin Park since the 1980s and 1990s to his relatives in the United States. After a series of comparisons and tests, Eric's identity was officially confirmed in February 2025.
His sister, Ruth Singer, said, “This knowledge has given us great comfort and confirmed that he was not living a secret life away from us.” His body was cremated, and the sisters kept the ashes at the family home in Ohio, allowing time to think about where to distribute them in the future.
It is worth mentioning that Eric was a talented musician who traveled between continents and was believed to have unique mental traits that sometimes helped him adapt to challenges, according to his sisters.
