Five Pakistanis lost their lives today, Monday, in a crash of a military helicopter belonging to the Pakistan Army in the town of Chilas in the Diamer District of Gilgit-Baltistan, resulting in the deaths of all those on board, which included two pilots and three technical crew members.

According to Pakistani authorities, the incident occurred while the Mi-17 helicopter was attempting to make a test landing at a newly proposed helipad in the Hodor village of the Thor Valley, but the helicopter experienced a technical failure during the landing attempt, according to the spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, Faizullah Faraq.

The incident caused a fire in the wreckage of the helicopter, prompting immediate intervention from rescue teams and police to control the flames and secure the site. The security official in Diamer, Abdul Hamid, confirmed the occurrence of five fatalities, noting that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The site of the incident was rushed to by the commander of the Northern Border Forces, the director of the Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts, and the commissioner of Diamer, along with a large number of local residents, to support the rescue efforts. The Prime Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Haji Gulbar Khan, ordered a state of emergency at the Chilas Hospital, directing medical teams to remain on standby to provide necessary support.

Gilgit-Baltistan, located in northern Pakistan on the borders with China, India, and Afghanistan, is a strategically important area with rugged mountainous terrain, making air travel, especially via helicopters, a vital means of transportation and relief. Mi-17 helicopters, which are of Russian manufacture, are widely used in Pakistan for military and civilian purposes, including relief operations in areas affected by natural disasters.

This incident comes just weeks after another Mi-17 helicopter belonging to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government crashed while on a flood relief mission, resulting in the deaths of five people as well. Gilgit-Baltistan has witnessed previous incidents, most notably the crash of a Mi-17 helicopter in 2015 in the Naltar Valley, which claimed the lives of eight people, including the ambassadors of Norway and the Philippines.
