تواجه دول البحر الأبيض المتوسط، بما فيها إسبانيا والبرتغال واليونان وتركيا ودول البلقان، حرائق غابات مدمرة، اندلعت، اليوم (الثلاثاء)، وسط موجة حر شديدة رفعت الحرارة إلى أكثر من 40 درجة مئوية في أنحاء أوروبا.
يعزو العلماء تفاقم هذه الحرائق إلى الاحتباس الحراري، الذي يجعل صيف المنطقة أكثر حرارة وجفافاً، ما يؤدي إلى حرائق تتحول أحياناً إلى دوامات نارية.
في البرتغال، عبّر رئيس بلدية محلية، ألكسندر فافايوس، عن قلقه قائلاً: «نحن نحترق أحياء، وهذا لا يطاق»، بينما يحتدم ثلاثة حرائق في مناطقه.
وفي ضواحي مدريد، تسبب حريق في وفاة رجل يعمل بإسطبل خيول، وامتد إلى منازل ومزارع قبل احتوائه.
وفي ألبانيا، لقي شخص مصرعه في حريق، بينما يُشتبه أن عاملاً هنغارياً توفي بسبب الإجهاد الحراري في كتالونيا، وفي مونتينيغرو قُتل جندي وأصيب آخر إثر انقلاب شاحنة مياه خلال عمليات الإطفاء.
وفي طريفة بجنوب إسبانيا، سجّل الشيف الشهير خوسيه أندريس لقطات لألسنة اللهب فوق القرى، حيث أُجلي أكثر من 2000 شخص بسبب حريق نشب في غابات الأوكالبتوس والصنوبر، واستُخدمت مروحيات لإخماده بمياه البحر.
وأصدرت دول مثل ألبانيا وإسبانيا وإيطاليا تحذيرات من الحرارة، حيث بلغت درجات الحرارة 44 درجة مئوية في إسبانيا، مع رياح قوية وأمطار شحيحة، ما زاد من مخاطر الحرائق.
وفي إسبانيا، وضعت وزارة الداخلية قواتها في حالة تأهب، ويساند 1000 جندي جهود الإطفاء، بينما أوقفت حركة القطارات بين غاليسيا ومدريد، وفي كاستيا وليون، قاتل 1200 إطفائي 32 حريقاً، مع إجلاء الآلاف. وفي حادثة صادمة، أُلقي القبض على إطفائي في أفيلا بعد اعترافه بإشعال حريق لكسب دخل إضافي.
وفي البرتغال، يواجه 1300 إطفائي بدعم 16 طائرة، ثلاثة حرائق كبيرة، أحدها مستمر منذ 10 أيام.
وفي ألبانيا، دمرت الحرائق غابات وأراضي زراعية، بينما دعمت القوات المسلحة الإطفاء بمروحيات وجنود. وفي مونتينيغرو تم احتواء حريق قرب بودغوريتسا بدعم دولي. وفي اليونان، أجبرت الحرائق قرى وفنادق سياحية على الإخلاء، بينما استمر حريق في تركيا لليوم الثاني.
وتعاني المنطقة خسائر إنسانية ومادية، وقالت دراغانا فوكوفيتش من مونتينيغرو لـ«رويترز»: «الذكريات التي احترقت لا تُعوّض»، فيما تتلقى الدول المتضررة مساعدات من النمسا وإيطاليا وسلوفينيا عبر آلية الحماية المدنية الأوروبية.
Countries around the Mediterranean, including Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, and the Balkan states, are facing devastating wildfires that broke out today (Tuesday) amid a severe heatwave that has raised temperatures to over 40 degrees Celsius across Europe.
Scientists attribute the worsening of these fires to global warming, which makes the region's summer hotter and drier, leading to fires that sometimes turn into firestorms.
In Portugal, a local mayor, Alexandre Favaios, expressed his concern, saying: "We are burning alive, and this is unbearable," as three fires rage in his areas.
In the suburbs of Madrid, a fire resulted in the death of a man working at a horse stable and spread to homes and farms before being contained.
In Albania, one person died in a fire, while a Hungarian worker is suspected to have died from heat stress in Catalonia, and in Montenegro, a soldier was killed and another injured when a water truck overturned during firefighting operations.
In Tarifa, southern Spain, the famous chef José Andrés recorded footage of flames above the villages, where more than 2,000 people were evacuated due to a fire that broke out in eucalyptus and pine forests, with helicopters used to extinguish it with seawater.
Countries like Albania, Spain, and Italy issued heat warnings, with temperatures reaching 44 degrees Celsius in Spain, accompanied by strong winds and scarce rainfall, which increased the fire risks.
In Spain, the Ministry of the Interior has put its forces on alert, with 1,000 soldiers supporting firefighting efforts, while train services between Galicia and Madrid have been suspended. In Castilla y León, 1,200 firefighters battled 32 fires, evacuating thousands. In a shocking incident, a firefighter in Ávila was arrested after admitting to starting a fire to earn extra income.
In Portugal, 1,300 firefighters, supported by 16 aircraft, are facing three major fires, one of which has been ongoing for 10 days.
In Albania, the fires have destroyed forests and agricultural lands, while the armed forces supported firefighting efforts with helicopters and soldiers. In Montenegro, a fire near Podgorica has been contained with international support. In Greece, the fires forced the evacuation of villages and tourist hotels, while a fire in Turkey continued for the second day.
The region is suffering human and material losses, and Dragana Vuković from Montenegro told Reuters: "The memories that burned are irreplaceable," while the affected countries are receiving assistance from Austria, Italy, and Slovenia through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.
