توفي رائد الفضاء الأمريكي جيم لوفيل، قائد مهمة «أبولو 13» الشهيرة إلى القمر، الذي نجا بأعجوبة من كارثة إثر عملية إنقاذ حبست أنفاس العالم، عن 97 عاما، وفق ما أعلنت وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية (ناسا).
ولفتت ناسا، في بيان، إلى أن هذا الطيار السابق في سلاح البحرية، الذي أصبح شخصية بارزة في تاريخ الفضاء، توفي في ولاية إيلينوي.
وأكدت وكالة الفضاء الأمريكية أن «حياته وعمله ألهما ملايين الناس على مر العقود»، مشيدة بـ«شخصيته وشجاعته التي لا تتزعزع».
وشارك جيم لوفيل في رحلتين إلى القمر من دون أن يمشي على سطحه. ومع ذلك، دخل الأمريكي التاريخ بمشاركته في واحدة من أشهر رحلات الفضاء خلال السباق إلى القمر أثناء الحرب الباردة.
وأُطلقت مهمة «أبولو 13» بقيادة جيم لوفيل، وشارك فيها رائدا الفضاء فريد هايس وجاك سويغرت، في أبريل 1970، بعد 9 أشهر من الخطوات التاريخية الأولى لنيل أرمسترونغ على سطح القمر.
وكان من الممكن أن تمر المهمة من دون أن تثير أي اهتمام خاص، لكن العكس حصل بسبب انفجار خزان الأكسجين أثناء الرحلة.
ومن هذا الحادث المروع، انبثقت العبارة الشهيرة Houston, we have a problem (هيوستن، لدينا مشكلة) التي نطق بها رواد الفضاء في مركز قيادة ناسا في تكساس.
ووجدت أمريكا، التي كانت تعدّ هذه الرحلات روتينية حينها، نفسها تُدفع مباشرةً إلى مأساة غير مسبوقة، إذ كان 3 رجال يواجهون خطر البقاء في الفضاء إلى الأبد.
وبفضل رباطة جأش جيم لوفيل واحترافية ناسا وإبداعها، نجا الثلاثة بأعجوبة، وعادوا بسلام إلى الأرض بتحويل الوحدة القمرية إلى ما يشبه قارب النجاة.
American astronaut Jim Lovell, commander of the famous "Apollo 13" mission to the moon, who miraculously survived a disaster during a rescue operation that held the world's breath, passed away at the age of 97, according to the U.S. space agency (NASA).
NASA noted in a statement that this former Navy pilot, who became a prominent figure in the history of space, died in Illinois.
The U.S. space agency confirmed that "his life and work inspired millions of people over the decades," praising his "unwavering character and courage."
Jim Lovell participated in two moon missions without walking on its surface. Nevertheless, the American entered history by being part of one of the most famous space missions during the race to the moon during the Cold War.
The "Apollo 13" mission, led by Jim Lovell, included astronauts Fred Haise and Jack Swigert, and was launched in April 1970, nine months after Neil Armstrong's historic first steps on the moon.
The mission could have passed without attracting any special attention, but the opposite occurred due to an oxygen tank explosion during the flight.
From this horrific incident emerged the famous phrase "Houston, we have a problem," spoken by the astronauts at NASA's control center in Texas.
America, which considered these missions routine at the time, found itself thrust directly into an unprecedented tragedy, as three men faced the danger of remaining in space forever.
Thanks to Jim Lovell's composure, NASA's professionalism, and ingenuity, the three miraculously survived and returned safely to Earth by transforming the lunar module into something resembling a lifeboat.
