The spokesperson for the provincial government, Shahid Rind, clarified that the suspension aims to prevent militants from using the internet to coordinate their attacks and exchange information. This decision came after a deadly attack in the Mastung area of Balochistan, where militants targeted a military vehicle with an explosive device, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers last Tuesday.

In response, Pakistani forces carried out a "clean-up" operation that resulted in the deaths of four militants. Islamabad accuses these groups, particularly the "Baloch Liberation Army," of being supported by India to destabilize the region, a claim that New Delhi denies.
The suspension has affected 8.5 million subscribers to mobile phone services in Balochistan, which is the largest province in Pakistan by area but has a low population, with 15 million residents out of a total of 240 million in the country. The decision has sparked widespread discontent among the population, as it has disrupted daily life, education, online businesses, and access to social media.
Balochistan, located on the borders of Afghanistan and Iran, is a strategic area due to its rich natural resources, including coal, copper, gas, and gold, as well as hosting the Gwadar port, a key part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor under the $65 billion Chinese "Belt and Road" initiative. However, the region has been experiencing a long-standing separatist insurgency, with separatist groups accusing the Pakistani government of exploiting its resources without fair profit distribution to local residents, leading to continued poverty despite the region's wealth.
In recent months, separatist attacks have escalated, especially with the approach of the 78th anniversary of Pakistan's independence on August 14, when tensions typically rise. In August 2024, Balochistan witnessed the highest rate of terrorist attacks, resulting in the deaths of 88 people, including soldiers and civilians, and injuring 100 others. Among the notable incidents was an attack in March 2025 targeting a railway, which resulted in the deaths of 31 people, including 23 soldiers, and the abduction of more than 400 passengers.
