In a historic step highlighting her increasing role within the British royal family, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been granted the privilege of issuing "royal warrants" to businesses and brands, becoming the first Princess of Wales to receive this right since 1910, when Princess Mary of Teck was the last to be granted it.
On June 30, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III appointed Prince William and Kate as "grantors" of these prestigious warrants, a move seen as a testament to their economic and cultural influence, especially with what is known as "Kate's effect," which significantly boosts brand sales.
According to the decision, the Prince and Princess of Wales will be able to grant royal warrants to companies providing goods or services to the royal family starting in the spring of 2026, allowing them to use the royal family crest on their products and marketing. This privilege, which is granted for up to five years, serves as a mark of appreciation for companies that regularly supply the royal palace, whether they are major brands like "Fortnum & Mason" or small businesses like local artisans.
In his statements, the private secretary to Prince William, Sir Ian Patrick, expressed the couple's happiness with this opportunity, saying: "Their Royal Highnesses are delighted to be able to celebrate British industry, creativity, and skills through the granting of royal warrants."
This step is particularly historic for Kate, as Princess Diana was not granted this privilege during her time as Princess of Wales, even though King Charles began issuing warrants in 1980 when he was Prince of Wales. It is expected that Kate, known for her love of British brands, will focus on supporting companies that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and quality, standards that King Charles has introduced as part of the warrant requirements.
This move comes at a time when Kate is gradually returning to her public duties after recovering from cancer, having announced in January 2025 that she is in recovery and looking forward to a year full of achievements. It is anticipated that her granting of royal warrants will enhance her economic impact, as "Kate's effect" is estimated to have added around £1 billion to the British fashion industry by 2021, with products featuring her selling out within minutes.
