According to Unite Here Local 11, the strike decision received support from 96% of the workers eligible to vote, indicating the level of discontent within the service sector at the stadium, which is undergoing intensive preparations to host one of the tournament's most prominent matches. The union represents about 2,000 workers, including food and beverage service providers, dishwashers, cooks, and temporary event workers before, during, and after events.
This development comes after stalled rounds of negotiations with the operating company, with expectations to resume talks next Monday in an attempt to avoid any potential disruption at one of the most frequently used stadiums for the tournament, as SoFi Stadium is set to host 8 matches during the World Cup.
Reports indicate that the main disputes revolve around wages and working conditions, in addition to workers' demands for guarantees that their personal information will not be shared with immigration authorities, amid growing concerns within the labor sector in Los Angeles. This coincides with a sensitive political and security context, following reports of previous federal actions related to immigration in the city, which have been accompanied by tensions and protests.
At the same time, local authorities have stated that elements from federal law enforcement agencies will participate in securing World Cup matches inside the stadiums, with assurances from security officials that civil immigration laws will not be enforced during sporting events, although it was noted that this arrangement remains subject to change based on security developments.
SoFi Stadium, which hosts the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers in the National Football League, is facing a critical organizational test as the tournament approaches, especially with ticket prices for the opening match of the U.S. team against Paraguay on June 12 starting at $2,000, followed by another match on June 15 between Iran and New Zealand, as part of a busy schedule hosted by the stadium during the World Cup.
