The legal advisor Saud Al-Rumman, specialized in sports law, confirmed that Al-Hilal Club's decision to terminate the contract of its Portuguese player João Cancelo on the grounds of injury does not comply with the regulations in force at the Saudi Football Federation.
Al-Rumman explained that the Saudi Federation had canceled Article (75) regarding the replacement of injured players in 2021, and replaced it with Article (29), which allows the registration of players outside of registration periods under specific conditions. This means that the system no longer permits replacing an injured player with another locally.
He pointed out that this principle was previously applied to Al-Nasr Club when its Argentine player Gonzalo Martínez suffered a long-term injury, as he was not allowed to register a replacement. This, in his opinion, imposes equality in application and does not exempt any club from the rules.
Al-Rumman emphasized that the removal of a player from the team's roster can only occur with their explicit and clear consent, and that any action contrary to this is considered legally incorrect.
This statement opens the door once again to a broad legal discussion about the mechanism for applying regulations in Saudi football, and the necessity of unifying legal interpretations to preserve fairness and enhance integrity and competitiveness among clubs.
