In a time when digital platforms have become a major window for opinion and influence, the sports podcasting scene in Saudi Arabia has witnessed an unprecedented outburst, where some episodes have turned into arenas of insults, spaces for accusations, and emotional displays that have no connection to journalism, but rather reflect a charged public sentiment broadcasted without limits or awareness.
The investigation we are conducting today does not target the platforms themselves, but rather sheds light on dangerous practices led by some "podcast hosts" who are not journalists, who have taken their sports affiliations as platforms for harsh criticism, slander, and even defamation, exploiting audiences who do not realize that what is said in friends' gatherings is not what is legally acceptable in a public space considered an official media platform.
The latest incident occurred when a fan on a sports podcast directed hurtful remarks towards the players of Al-Nassr Club, prompting the club's legal department to file an official complaint with the relevant authorities, considering what was said a legal transgression classified as defamation and public insult.
The microphone is not a gathering place
Lawyer Salman Al-Ramali warns, saying: "What many fans do not know is that the law does not differentiate between a traditional or digital media platform; mere public publication incurs responsibility. Anyone speaking on a podcast is held accountable just like a journalist in a daily newspaper. The problem is that some producers mislead their guests, contributing to their falling into a legal trap without protection."
Educational deviation
Meanwhile, educational expert Hamdan Al-Toumi points out that "the younger generation is dangerously influenced by the content of these podcasts, as they learn that mockery, loud voices, and insults are the way to gain fame. This is a serious educational deviation that families and educational institutions must confront through awareness and by demanding regulatory oversight."
Producers without a charter
For his part, digital communication expert Awad Al-Shammari confirms that "the absence of media governance by the Media Regulation Authority has allowed the proliferation of fan podcasts whose producers have not received professional training and do not understand the concepts of editorial responsibility. While these programs should be tools for awareness, they have turned into tools for incitement and destruction."
He adds: "What we see now is chaos led by amateurs, not journalists, who produce episodes aimed at gaining interaction rather than building opinion, and fans are often used as tools to vent their anger over match results."
Professional awareness
The continuation of this chaos, without regulatory intervention from the Media Authority or relevant bodies, opens the door to greater violations and places the youth in a circle of value and legal danger.
It is essential to issue a binding code of conduct for sports podcasts, which includes standards for publication, regulations for hosting fans, and legal accountability for producers and hosts who lack the minimum level of professional awareness.
"Podcasts" are a platform with an impact, but they are not an open battlefield.
