ونشر جيسوس صورة أرشيفية عبر حسابه على «إنستغرام» يظهر فيها وهو يصافح رونالدو قبيل إحدى المباريات، وعلق عليها: «كريس (كريستيانو) هو رمز للمنتخب البرتغالي، رمز للبرتغال بأكملها، وهذا أمر يجب أن يكون واضحاً جداً للجميع».
وتعود تفاصيل التوتر إلى مواجهة النرويج الأخيرة، حين ظل رونالدو على مقاعد البدلاء طوال الـ90 دقيقة رغم إجرائه عمليات الإحماء، في اللقاء الذي انتهى بفوز البرتغال 2-1، وفق التقرير الذي بثه موقع «RT».
وازدادت السخونة بعد تصريحات جيسوس التي أكد فيها أن رونالدو لن يبدأ أساسياً أيضاً أمام الدنمارك، مشدداً على أن قراراته فنية بحتة، وعلى إثر ذلك غادر رونالدو معسكر المنتخب.
من جانبه، كتب رونالدو عبر حسابه على «إنستغرام» أنه سيكشف في الوقت المناسب للشعب البرتغالي بأسره حقيقة الأسباب الكامنة وراء هذا القرار.

Jesus posted an archival photo on his Instagram account showing him shaking hands with Ronaldo before one of the matches, commenting: "Chris (Cristiano) is a symbol of the Portuguese national team, a symbol of all of Portugal, and this should be very clear to everyone."
The details of the tension date back to the recent match against Norway, where Ronaldo remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes despite warming up, in a game that ended with Portugal winning 2-1, according to a report broadcast by "RT".
The situation heated up further after Jesus's statements confirming that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark either, emphasizing that his decisions are purely technical, after which Ronaldo left the national team's camp.
For his part, Ronaldo wrote on his Instagram account that he would reveal the truth behind this decision to the entire Portuguese people at the appropriate time.
