Saudi national team coach Donis confirmed that the success of the Green Team in maintaining a clean sheet over five consecutive matches reflects the collective effort and tactical discipline of the players. This came after the Saudi team qualified for the final of the Arabian Gulf Cup "Gulf 27" after defeating the Qatari team in a penalty shootout (3-2) in the match held today at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, as part of the semi-final round, noting that the coaching staff aims to continue developing the team's character and improving its decisions when in possession of the ball.
Donis said in response to a question from "Okaz": "We have played five consecutive matches without conceding a goal, against Cape Verde, Kuwait, Oman, Iraq, and now Qatar. This confirms that the entire group is performing well defensively on the field, not just the defenders."
He added: "All 11 players on the field are applying the defensive aspect well, alongside the work done by the defenders. Even in the match against Qatar, we only made one mistake in the final part of the match that resulted in a shot, but overall, we did not give the opponent many chances."
Donis praised the significant role played by the Saudi fans in supporting the team, confirming that they were part of the spirit that led the Green Team to the final match. He said: "After the match, I said that I must congratulate our fans because they gave us motivation from the first minute until the end, and they continued to support the team throughout the match."
He added: "The spirit was not only present within the team, but we were one group with the fans, and everyone was together for one goal."
The Green Team coach revealed that he urged his players during the second extra half to continue pressing and fighting to resolve the match before reaching penalties. He said: "In the last 15 minutes of extra time, I tried to push the players to fight harder and attempt to win the match without going to penalties, but sometimes you have a great desire, yet the body cannot execute what you want due to fatigue."
Donis explained that he was keen to boost his players' confidence before taking the penalties, saying: "I told them before the penalties: You have a good character, and you deserve this after the excellent work you have done during this period. Go and take the penalties with confidence, and I am sure of our ability to reach the final."
He emphasized the need to maintain defensive solidity in the upcoming stage while developing offensive performance and the quality of decisions when possessing the ball, saying: "We must continue in this way, and at the same time, we need to improve our decisions and movements when we have the ball."
Donis touched on what the Green Team needs offensively, emphasizing the importance of improving ball handling in critical areas. He said: "When we reach important attacking areas, we need to make the right decision and execute the appropriate movement, along with having more players inside the penalty area."
He clarified that the match against Qatar was an important lesson for the team in dealing with defensive blocks, saying: "It is not easy for any team, even the biggest teams in the world, to face 11 players defending in a space no larger than 25 or 30 meters. We are trying as a team to develop our tactical solutions, specific movements, make the right decisions, and bring more players into the penalty area."
He added: "Today was not our best day in this aspect, but it was a useful match and a good lesson because we may face many teams, especially in our region, that play the same way and rely on defense throughout the match."
Donis pointed out the impact of the pressure of matches and their proximity on the physical and mental state of the players, confirming that fatigue can affect the quality of decisions and execution on the field, especially after the match against Qatar reached 120 minutes.
Regarding the main technical issues, he said: "I do not like to talk about players individually, but I believe that our biggest problem was set pieces, as our execution of the kicks was not at the required level."
He addressed the specific refereeing situation regarding Hamdan, saying: "I saw the incident with Hamdan, and for me, it was a clear penalty. The ball did not go to the player's body, but went directly to his hand, and we had a chance to resolve the match earlier."
About his dealings with referees, Donis explained that he has become calmer compared to his time working with clubs, saying: "I was more emotional when I coached clubs, but now I am very calm with referees, even when I have a different opinion. I represent the national team, so I must maintain my composure, and we respect the referees and our opponents."
Donis confirmed that the Green Team deserves to reach the final match, saying: "Looking at what we have presented during the past four matches, in addition to the match against Qatar, we deserve to reach the final."
He spoke about the development of his experience with the national team, explaining that he entered the current tournament more prepared as he knows the players and their personalities better, in addition to the clarity of the coaching staff's requirements for the players.
He said: "After the previous period, I sat with the administration and the technical director, and we came up with many conclusions, preparing many things, whether the rules within the group or the plan and tactical ideas. The advantage now is that I know the players, and they also know what to expect from me and what I expect from them."
He pointed out that he worked to lower the average age of the national team, confirming the clarity of his criteria in selecting players, saying: "Whoever is ready to commit to what we ask and walk with us on this path will be present, and whoever is not ready for that will not be with us."
Donis concluded his remarks by emphasizing that work continues to develop the character of the Green Team, saying: "We have a good group and players who possess quality and love the national team. The levels and results we provide, along with our daily work, will help us build a stronger character and develop further."
