The representative of the nation, Al Ahly Club, looks forward to continuing its quest for global glory when it faces Mamelodi Sundowns, the African champion, in the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup match organized by FIFA tomorrow (Saturday) at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The reigning AFC Champions League holder secured its place in this matchup after defeating Auckland FC, the Oceania champion, with a score of 1-0 in Jeddah last month, where Saleh Abu Shamat scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute.
A victory in Pretoria will guarantee Al Ahly the title of the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup organized by FIFA and qualification for the Challenge Cup, bringing the Saudi team just one win away from reaching the final of the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup, where it will face UEFA Champions League champion Paris Saint-Germain.
Al Ahly had to be patient against Auckland, as coach Marinos Ouzounidis's team dominated possession but struggled to penetrate the New Zealand team's defense before Abu Shamat scored following Edward Spiritsian's run and his cross.
Now, the two-time Asian champion faces a different challenge against Sundowns, who are playing at home and participating in the tournament as the reigning African Champions League holders.
The South African team, led by coach Miguel Cardoso, is known for its possession-based style and technical quality in midfield, and will look to take advantage of the home ground at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Sundowns enters the (Saturday) match after a 1-1 draw with Chippa United in the local league, while Al Ahly will aim to build on the resilience it showed during its victory over Auckland.
With continental pride and the cup at stake, Coach Ouzounidis's team will be determined to take another significant step in a journey that began with its crowning as the AFC Champions League holder in March of this year.
Teams: Mamelodi Sundowns - Al Ahly Saudi
Stadium: Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
