Martins Kazaks, a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank and the Governor of the Bank of Latvia, confirmed that the strong performance of the Eurozone economy could open the door to raising interest rates to levels that would constrain economic activity, if the economy continues to perform according to the expected baseline scenario.
Kazaks explained that the energy shock resulting from the war in the Middle East has become more sustainable, emphasizing the importance of preventing the rise in oil and natural gas prices from spilling over into other sectors, which could increase inflationary pressures.
He added, in an interview with Bloomberg Television today (Friday), that adopting a more restrictive monetary policy would be the "likely outcome" if the economy continues to perform in line with the baseline scenario.
Kazaks links the trajectory of interest rates in the Eurozone to the economy's ability to continue to withstand pressures, along with developments in the energy shock and ongoing inflationary pressures, at a time when the timing of any potential interest rate increases remains uncertain, amid rising levels of uncertainty.
