The Democratic Republic of Congo's national team delivered a stunning surprise in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup, securing a valuable 1-1 draw against Portugal in Group 11.
The "European Seleção" entered the match strongly, with João Neves successfully opening the scoring early in the 6th minute, giving Portugal a quick advantage amid expectations of a wide victory. With his goal, Neves became the third youngest Portuguese scorer in World Cup history at the age of 21 years and 263 days.
However, the "Leopards" refused to give up and showed great character, with Yuan Wesa managing to equalize with a crucial header in the 5+ minute of first-half stoppage time.
