أثار مقر معسكر المنتخب السويسري في مدينة سان دييغو الأمريكية، جدلاً واسعاً في منصات «السوشال ميديا»، لقرب المقر من منطقة موسومة باسم «منطقة الأفاعي»، ما دفع الكثيرين للتساؤل حول سلامة اللاعبين وإمكانية تغيير مقر إقامتهم قبل انطلاق المونديال.
وبحسب التقارير الصادرة من مدينة سان دييغو، فإن التحذير جاء كإجراء احترازي نظراً لوجود بيئة طبيعية قريبة من مركز التدريب تُعرف بانتشار بعض أنواع الأفاعي المحلية، ومنها الأفاعي الجرسية.
ولم يصدر من الاتحاد السويسري لكرة القدم، والاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم (فيفا) أي تصريحات رسمية تشير إلى تقديم طلب لتغيير المقر.
