أعلن نادي كوينز اليوم عودة أسطورة التنس الأمريكية سيرينا ويليامز إلى المنافسات الرسمية بعمر 44 عاماً، من خلال مشاركتها ببطاقة دعوة (وايلد كارد) في منافسات الزوجي على الملاعب العشبية خلال بطولة كوينز التي تقام هذا الشهر في لندن.
وكانت سيرينا قد اعتزلت التنس بشكل رسمي في سبتمبر 2022 بعد خروجها من الدور الثالث لبطولة أمريكا المفتوحة، إذ تمتلك في رصيدها 23 لقباً في البطولات الأربع الكبرى، وهي واحدة من أعظم لاعبات التنس في التاريخ.
وقالت سيرينا في بيان صادر عن النادي: «يبدو نادي كوينز المكان المثالي لبدء هذا الفصل الجديد. لقد منحني اللعب على العشب بعضاً من أهم لحظات مسيرتي، وأنا متحمسة للعودة إلى المنافسة على واحدة من أشهر أرضيات هذه الرياضة».
تكهنات العودة
كانت عودة سيرينا محور تكهنات كبيرة خلال الأشهر الماضية، خصوصاً بعد تسجيلها اسمها في برنامج مكافحة المنشطات العام الماضي، إذ تعززت هذه التكهنات بعدما تهربت بأسلوب مرح من الإجابة عن أسئلة مباشرة حول عودتها خلال مقابلة مع شبكة NBC.
وفي مارس الماضي، أكد نوفاك ديوكوفيتش أن سيرينا قد تستهدف بطولة ويمبلدون، بينما أشار مدربها السابق ريك ماكي إلى أنها «تبذل قصارى جهدها» في التدريبات.
وتُعد سيرينا ويليامز، إلى جانب شقيقتها الكبرى فينوس، من أبرز اللاعبات اللواتي غيرن وجه رياضة التنس، إذ سيطرت سيرينا على اللعبة لأكثر من عقدين، وحققت إنجازات تاريخية سواء في الفردي أو الزوجي.
وتأتي عودة سيرينا في منافسات الزوجي خطوةً احترازيةً ومدروسةً لاختبار قدرتها البدنية قبل أي مشاركة محتملة في الفردي، خصوصاً على الملاعب العشبية التي تحمل لها ذكريات خاصة (بطلة ويمبلدون 7 مرات).
Queens Club announced today the return of American tennis legend Serena Williams to official competitions at the age of 44, through her participation with a wild card in the doubles events on the grass courts during the Queens tournament taking place this month in London.
Serena officially retired from tennis in September 2022 after exiting in the third round of the US Open, holding a record of 23 Grand Slam titles, and she is one of the greatest tennis players in history.
Serena said in a statement released by the club: "Queens Club seems like the perfect place to start this new chapter. Playing on grass has given me some of the most important moments of my career, and I am excited to return to compete on one of the most famous surfaces in this sport."
Return Speculations
Serena's return has been the subject of much speculation over the past few months, especially after she registered her name in the anti-doping program last year. This speculation was heightened when she playfully dodged direct questions about her return during an interview with NBC.
In March, Novak Djokovic confirmed that Serena might be targeting Wimbledon, while her former coach Rick Macci indicated that she is "doing her best" in training.
Serena Williams, along with her older sister Venus, is one of the most prominent players who have changed the face of tennis, as Serena dominated the game for over two decades, achieving historic accomplishments both in singles and doubles.
Serena's return to the doubles events is a precautionary and calculated step to test her physical capabilities before any potential participation in singles, especially on the grass courts that hold special memories for her (7-time Wimbledon champion).
