أكدت نجمة التنس الأمريكية سيرينا وليامز عودتها إلى المنافسات الرسمية بعد غياب دام نحو 4 أعوام، وذلك من خلال مشاركتها في منافسات الزوجي ببطولة كوينز الإنجليزية المقررة خلال الشهر الجاري.
ولم تخض وليامز، البالغة من العمر 44 عاماً، أي مباراة رسمية منذ خروجها من الدور الثالث لبطولة الولايات المتحدة المفتوحة عام 2022، في آخر ظهور لها على ملاعب التنس.
وستشارك الأمريكية، المتوجة بـ 23 لقباً في بطولات الغراند سلام، في منافسات الزوجي إلى جانب الكندية الشابة فيكتوريا مبوكو، بعدما حصلت على بطاقة دعوة للمشاركة في البطولة التي تنطلق في الـ8 من يونيو القادم.
وقالت وليامز في تصريحات صحفية، إن نادي كوينز يمثّل المكان المثالي لبدء هذا الفصل الجديد من مسيرتها الرياضية، مشيرة إلى أن الملاعب العشبية شهدت بعضاً من أبرز لحظاتها في عالم التنس.
من جانبها، رحّبت مديرة البطولة لورا روبسون بعودة النجمة الأمريكية، مؤكدة أن حضور واحدة من أعظم اللاعبات في تاريخ الرياضة يمثل إضافة كبيرة للبطولة ولتنس السيدات.
وتعد سيرينا وليامز صاحبة الرقم القياسي في عدد ألقاب البطولات الكبرى خلال حقبة الاحتراف برصيد 23 لقباً، وتأتي ثانية في قائمة الأكثر تتويجاً عبر التاريخ خلف الأسترالية مارغريت كورت التي أحرزت 24 لقباً.
American tennis star Serena Williams has confirmed her return to official competitions after an absence of nearly 4 years, by participating in the doubles event at the upcoming Queen's English tournament scheduled for this month.
Williams, who is 44 years old, has not played any official match since her exit in the third round of the 2022 US Open, which was her last appearance on the tennis courts.
The American, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles, will compete in the doubles alongside young Canadian player Victoria Mboko, after receiving a wildcard to participate in the tournament that kicks off on June 8th.
In press statements, Williams said that Queen's Club represents the perfect place to start this new chapter in her sports career, noting that the grass courts have witnessed some of her most significant moments in the world of tennis.
For her part, tournament director Laura Robson welcomed the American star's return, affirming that the presence of one of the greatest players in sports history is a significant addition to the tournament and women's tennis.
Serena Williams holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles during the professional era with 23 titles, and she ranks second on the all-time list behind Australian Margaret Court, who won 24 titles.
