تعتبر بطولة كأس الملك السعودي من أقدم البطولات السعودية وأعرقها، إذ بدأ تنظيم البطولة قبل أكثر من 68 عاماً، وبدأت أول نسخة في 1957، وتوقفت في 1990، وعادت لتستكمل من جديد في 2008 إلى يومنا هذا.
مرت البطولة بالعديد من المنعطفات والتغييرات، إذ كانت في السابق تلعب بنظام دوري المناطق، ومن ثم نظام خروج المغلوب المعمول به إلى الآن، وهناك بعض المواسم التي لم تنظم فيها لأسباب متعددة أبرزها عام 1975 بسبب وفاة الملك فيصل (رحمه الله)، وأقيمت بطولة كأس الملك منذ بدايتها في عهد 6 ملوك تناوبوا على حكم المملكة العربية السعودية، واحتضنت نهائي تلك البطولة 6 ملاعب أيضاً.
يتصدر الهلال قائمة الأندية الأكثر تتويجاً بكأس خادم الحرمين الشريفين برصيد 9 ألقاب، وفقاً لما أظهرته البيانات المعتمدة في سجل البطولة، ليؤكد مكانته كأحد أبرز أندية الكرة السعودية حضوراً على منصات الذهب، ويأتي الأهلي في المركز الثاني برصيد 8 بطولات، وفي المركز الثالث يحل الاتحاد برصيد 6 ألقاب، يليه النصر بـ5 بطولات، أما بقية الأندية، فيبرز الشباب بثلاثة ألقاب، فيما يمتلك كل من الاتفاق والوحدة لقبين، وضمت القائمة أيضاً الفيحاء والفيصلي والتعاون بلقب واحد لكل منهم، في مشهد يعكس تنوع المنافسة وتوزع الألقاب عبر عقود البطولة.

The King Saud Cup is considered one of the oldest and most prestigious Saudi tournaments, having been organized for over 68 years, with the first edition starting in 1957. It was paused in 1990 and resumed again in 2008 to this day.
The tournament has gone through many twists and changes; it was previously played under a regional league system, and then transitioned to the knockout system currently in use. There were some seasons that were not organized for various reasons, most notably in 1975 due to the death of King Faisal (may he rest in peace). The King’s Cup has been held since its inception during the reign of 6 kings who ruled the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the final of this tournament has been hosted in 6 stadiums as well.
Al-Hilal tops the list of clubs with the most King Abdulaziz Cup titles, boasting 9 championships, according to the official data recorded in the tournament's history, confirming its status as one of the most prominent Saudi football clubs on the gold podium. Al-Ahli comes in second with 8 titles, while Al-Ittihad ranks third with 6 titles, followed by Al-Nasr with 5 championships. Other clubs include Al-Shabab with 3 titles, while both Al-Ettifaq and Al-Wahda have 2 titles each. The list also includes Al-Fayha, Al-Faisaly, and Al-Taawoun, each with one title, reflecting the diversity of competition and the distribution of titles over the decades of the tournament.
