The Duhok team won the Iraq Cup for the first time in its history after defeating Zakho 5-3 in a penalty shootout, in the final match held at the Al-Shaab International Stadium in Baghdad, following a goalless draw at the end of the regular and extra time.
Coach Suleiman Ramadan led the Duhok team to achieve this historic accomplishment, which also secured them a spot in the upcoming edition of the AFC Champions League 2.
The match witnessed significant tension, especially during extra time, after Qatari referee Salman Flahi canceled a penalty for Duhok following a video review.
The situation escalated during the penalty shootout when the referee ordered the last kick to be retaken, which was initially saved by goalkeeper Ali Kazem from Duhok player Karim Darwish, citing that the goalkeeper had advanced from the goal line, which sparked strong objections from Zakho players led by Amjad Atwan, who engaged in a heated discussion with the referee.
Things escalated to a physical altercation between one of Duhok's officials and Amjad Atwan, prompting the referee to show a red card to the official.
After reviewing the video, the referee ordered the penalty to be taken again, allowing Karim Darwish to successfully score and secure the title for his team.
The controversy did not end there, as Darwish, after the penalty, directed himself towards the Zakho fans' stands and raised his team's shirt in a provocative gesture that incited anger within the stadium.
