بدأ باتشوكا اللقاء مهاجماً وكاد يهز شباك ريال مدريد في الدقائق الأولى، لكن الدفاع أنقذ المرمى، ومن هجمة مرتدة تعرض اللاعب الفنزويلي سالمون روندون للإعاقة من مدافع ريال مدريد راؤول أسينسيو لم يتردد حكم اللقاء رامون إياتي في منحه البطاقة الحمراء بعد مرور 7 دقائق فقط من بداية اللقاء ليكمل ريال مدريد اللقاء ناقصاً لاعباً.
الجدير بالذكر أن ريال مدريد بحاجة للفوز للمنافسة على التأهل لدور الـ16 إذ يملك نقطة واحدة فقط من تعادله مع الهلال بهدف لكل منهما، فيما لا يمتلك الفريق المكسيكي أي نقطة بعد خسارته في المباراة الأولى أمام ريد بول سالزبورغ بهدفين لهدف.
