تصدرت مدينة «زاخو» العراقية القديمة المشهد العالمي بعدما اختارها اتحاد كرة القدم الدولي (الفيفا) لمنح جمهور فريقها المحلي لقب أفضل جمهور في العالم.
وجاء هذا التكريم بعد المبادرة الإنسانية النادرة لجماهير النادي، التي اشترت الدمى لرميها على أرض الملعب خلال مباراة فريقهم ضد فريق الحدود ضمن دوري نجوم العراق، ليتم توزيعها لاحقاً على مرضى السرطان بالمستشفيات.
هذه الخطوة لم تمنح جمهور النادي شهرة فقط، بل أضاءت مدينة زاخو ذات التاريخ العريق، الواقعة في شمال العراق قرب حدود تركيا وسورية، والتي تتبع إدارياً لمحافظة دهوك في إقليم كردستان. المدينة التي يعود تاريخها لما قبل الميلاد، تشتهر بخصوبة أراضيها ووفرة معالمها التاريخية، ومن أبرزها القلعة على ضفاف نهر «الخابور»، والمسجد الكبير وجسورها الشهيرة، مثل «الجسر المعلّق» و«جسر الدلال».
وفي السنوات الأخيرة، شهدت زاخو نهضة في البنية التحتية والمشاريع الاستثمارية، ما جعلها وجهة محتملة للسياح الباحثين عن التاريخ والطبيعة، رغم أنها غالباً ما تغيب عن الإعلام مقارنةً بأربيل ومدن شمال العراق الأخرى.
ويعيش في زاخو خليط متنوع من الديانات والقوميات، يغلب عليهم الأكراد المسلمون، إلى جانب العرب والمسيحيين من الكلدان والسريان والأرمن، إضافةً إلى القرى الإيزيدية، ما يجعلها مدينة غنية ثقافياً وإنسانياً.
The ancient Iraqi city of "Zakho" has taken center stage in the global scene after being chosen by the International Football Federation (FIFA) to award its local team's fans the title of the best fans in the world.
This recognition came after the rare humanitarian initiative by the club's fans, who bought dolls to throw onto the field during their team's match against the Al-Hudood team in the Iraqi Stars League, which were later distributed to cancer patients in hospitals.
This step not only brought fame to the club's fans but also illuminated the historic city of Zakho, located in northern Iraq near the borders of Turkey and Syria, which is administratively part of the Duhok Governorate in the Kurdistan Region. The city, whose history dates back to before Christ, is known for its fertile lands and abundance of historical landmarks, including the castle on the banks of the "Khabur" River, the grand mosque, and its famous bridges, such as the "Hanging Bridge" and the "Dlal Bridge."
In recent years, Zakho has witnessed a renaissance in infrastructure and investment projects, making it a potential destination for tourists seeking history and nature, even though it often goes unnoticed in the media compared to Erbil and other cities in northern Iraq.
Zakho is home to a diverse mix of religions and ethnicities, predominantly Muslim Kurds, alongside Arabs and Christians from the Chaldeans, Syriacs, and Armenians, in addition to Yazidi villages, making it a culturally and humanely rich city.
