Brazil's national team coach Carlo Ancelotti said that Neymar's physical condition will be crucial for his inclusion in the national team for the World Cup next year, after he was excluded from the final squad for the two qualifying matches.
Ancelotti excluded the Brazilian Neymar (33 years old) from the 23-player roster for the matches against Chile and Bolivia in the World Cup qualifying, citing a minor injury to his leg muscles. However, Neymar later stated that his exclusion was for technical reasons.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain player has not worn the famous yellow jersey since October 2023 when he suffered a serious knee ligament injury that hindered his attempts to return.
Ancelotti told Brazilian network (ESPN) on Friday: "We will certainly not follow how Neymar plays. Everyone knows his talent."
He added: "In modern football, a player must be in good physical condition to take advantage of his talent. He will not face any issues joining the national team if he is in his best physical shape."
He continued: "Everyone wants Neymar in the national team in good physical condition. I talked to him and told him: you have time to prepare in the best way to join the national team and help the team give its best in the World Cup."
Neymar has shown glimpses of brilliance since returning to his childhood club, Santos, coming from Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal.
However, his struggles were evident last month when he left the field in tears after Santos' crushing defeat against Vasco da Gama. Ancelotti said he sees Neymar playing in midfield, either as an attacking midfielder or in attack. He explained: "I talked to him... everything is clear, the idea remains the same." He added: "He cannot play on the wings because modern football requires strikers with a high physical level, which is very important. He can be an attacking midfielder without issues."
Brazil, which has already qualified for the World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will play a friendly match against South Korea in Seoul on October 10.
