The Ukrainian authorities announced a power outage in seven regions of the country, including Kyiv, today (Friday), following Russian attacks targeting energy infrastructure, in the latest wave of assaults on the Ukrainian electricity grid.
The Reuters agency quoted Ukrainian Deputy Energy Minister Artem Nikrasov as saying that the attacks caused new power outages in the regions of Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv.
He added that the situation remains particularly difficult in the Kyiv metropolitan area, where utility teams continue to impose restrictions on the operation of the electricity grid due to the severe damage inflicted on the infrastructure. The Ukrainian official did not specify the number of residents affected by the outages or the expected duration for the complete restoration of power. He did not disclose details about the facilities that were bombed or the extent of the damage in each region.
The new outages reflect the ongoing pressure on the Ukrainian energy system, which has been subjected to a series of attacks targeting power generation stations and energy transmission and distribution facilities during the war. The damage inflicted on the Kyiv area is of particular significance due to the high population density in the capital and its surroundings, and the reliance of essential services on stable electricity supplies. Authorities are forced to impose additional consumption restrictions or redistribute loads when the grid is damaged, in order to maintain the stability of the parts that are still operational.
The recorded outages in the seven regions do not necessarily mean that all residents are without electricity, as the severity of the damage and the duration of the outages may vary from one location to another. The attacks come as Ukraine enters the cold season, when the demand for electricity and heating rises, increasing the importance of repairing damaged facilities and ensuring the continuity of supplies.
Since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022, the Ukrainian energy sector has suffered extensive damage, prompting authorities to implement emergency repairs and seek external assistance to restart some facilities. Kyiv states that targeting energy infrastructure threatens civilian lives and disrupts essential services, while Moscow continues its military operations against targets within Ukrainian territory.
