The Iraqi authorities continue their anti-corruption campaign that was launched months ago, and the judge of the Second Karkh Investigation Court, Diaa Jafar, announced the recovery of 21 billion and 424 million Iraqi dinars from two violating companies accused of fraud.
The judge clarified in a statement on (Sunday) that the violations were aimed at obtaining the difference in the dollar exchange rate in fraudulent money transfer operations outside the country.
The ruling came days after sentencing two MPs to 6 years in prison for one and 5 years for the other, and obliging them to repay financial amounts in a corruption case related to oil refinery contracts. The Anti-Corruption Court ruled (last Thursday) to imprison MP Muthana al-Samarrai, head of the Al-Azm bloc, for 6 years and obliged him to repay 30 billion dinars that he benefited from by mediating in contracts for northern and southern refineries.
It also sentenced MP Ziad al-Janabi to 5 years in strict imprisonment and obliged him to repay 4 billion dinars that he benefited from in northern refinery contracts.
Additionally, an 8-year prison sentence was handed down to Hussein Taleb, the former director general of the Oil Products Distribution Company, in a related case, for his involvement in awarding contracts for personal gain.
The Iraqi government launched a campaign of arrests in late June over administrative corruption charges, which included dozens of former and current MPs, ministry agents, and general directors as part of a campaign then dubbed "Dawn Assault."
