The American embassy in Yemen revealed that the Houthi terrorist militia has collected about 3.4 trillion Yemeni riyals in revenues during 2023, which it has spent on wars and conflicts both domestically and abroad, instead of paying salaries to employees and providing basic services to citizens, at a time when living conditions are worsening in the areas under its control.
Embassy spokesperson Khaled Wolfsberg stated in a video statement that the militia's revenues included proceeds from oil derivatives, customs, and zakat, among others, pointing out that they blame other parties for the deterioration of the economic situation, while directing the funds they collect away from the basic needs of the population.
Wolfsberg confirmed that these resources could have been used to pay salaries for employees and teachers, provide job opportunities, and improve public services, instead of funding conflicts that he said the group is engaged in both inside and outside Yemen, which threatens the lives of Yemenis and the security of the region.
The American spokesperson cited a video clip of one of the militia's leaders announcing the donation of large sums of money to the Iranian regime, referring to what he described as directing funds abroad, while Yemenis suffer from increasing economic pressures.
In this context, he recalled the Yemeni proverb: "Oh divider of the broth, your family's house is more deserving," criticizing the Houthi spending priorities.
While the militia continues to blame others for the economic crisis, the management of public revenue funds remains under scrutiny regarding how they are managed and to what extent they serve the citizens, at a time when Yemenis need salaries, services, and opportunities for living, not more spending on wars and conflicts.
