The Lebanese government's commissioner to the military court, Judge Claude Ghanem, has charged 13 individuals belonging to "Hezbollah" in the case of the explosives truck that was seized at the Deir al-Baydar checkpoint in eastern Lebanon.
The Lebanese News Agency reported today, Friday, that among the accused, some are detained, while five others are known only by their nicknames, without disclosing their full names.
The charges include crimes against internal state security, committing offenses that violate state law, violating government decisions, possession of weapons and explosives, and forming illegal associations aimed at undermining the authority and prestige of the state.
According to the agency, the penalties stipulated in the legal articles referenced by the prosecution can reach hard labor for ten years.
On Thursday, Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah admitted that a vehicle loaded with hundreds of kilograms of explosives, seized by Lebanese security forces last week in the Bekaa region of eastern Lebanon, belonged to the Lebanese group, and that the explosives were intended for use against Israel.
The Lebanese authorities intercepted the vehicle at a checkpoint and arrested two individuals inside it, without revealing at the time to whom it belonged, raising concerns in Lebanon about the potential use of the explosives in internal operations.
Fadlallah told reporters in the Lebanese parliament that "Hezbollah" intended to use the explosives against Israel, which still has forces present in areas of Lebanese territory that the Israeli army has controlled.
Disputes over how to handle the issue of the seized "Hezbollah" explosives in the Deir al-Baydar area have cast a shadow over the work of the Lebanese government, amid fears that the ongoing disagreement could disrupt cabinet sessions.
The ministers representing the Lebanese Forces party boycotted the cabinet session on Thursday in protest against the failure to include the explosives issue on the agenda and the delay in referring it to the Judicial Council.
The session was convened to discuss the waste crisis and ways to address it, amid ongoing political differences regarding the handling of the security file.
After the meeting concluded, Information Minister Paul Marqus announced that the session was exclusively dedicated to discussing the waste issue, noting that the cabinet listened to a presentation made by the Minister of Environment regarding the structural reforms needed in the sector.
