Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives in New York today (Thursday) for a brief visit to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, after his stay was reduced to just a few hours under the weight of security warnings, while his schedule does not include a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, amid anticipated protests against Israel's policies.
Israeli Channel 13 reported that security officials advised Netanyahu to shorten his stay in the United States and not to spend the night in New York, following meetings during which an intelligence assessment was presented that included specific security warnings. According to the new arrangements, Netanyahu will arrive in the morning, deliver his speech before the General Assembly, and then leave the United States on the same day.
The "Jerusalem Post" reveals that Netanyahu will spend only about six hours in the United States, in one of his shortest visits to participate in General Assembly meetings, while his schedule does not include a meeting with Trump, coinciding with expected protests in New York during his presence.
The absence of a meeting with Trump comes despite Netanyahu not being a stranger to these meetings; a U.S. official previously stated that the Israeli Prime Minister was not among the leaders scheduled to meet with the U.S. President during the General Assembly meetings, attributing this to difficulties in coordinating schedules. Subsequent reports confirmed that the schedules of both men did not allow for a meeting between them.
The reduction of the program did not stop at New York, as a planned stop in Texas to meet businessman Elon Musk was canceled after an Israeli team had previously arrived to prepare for the visit, only for the stop to be canceled, leaving Netanyahu's program practically focused on his speech before the United Nations.
The visit comes amid extensive security measures in New York, where the city’s police announced the deployment of thousands of personnel around the United Nations headquarters and along the routes of delegation movements, alongside counter-terrorism units, police dogs, bomb squads, and air and port units. The police confirmed, however, that there are no specific and credible threats to the city, while anticipating an increase in the frequency of protests during the week of the General Assembly.
Netanyahu also faces a highly tense political atmosphere during his time in New York, with pro-Palestinian protests expected to coincide with his speech, while a report by the "Associated Press" described his short visit as occurring amid increasing political tension and the absence of a scheduled meeting with Trump.
Thus, Netanyahu arrives in New York surrounded by a brief agenda, strict security measures, and the absence of a meeting with Trump, in a visit that has transformed from a broad diplomatic stop into just a few hours focused on the United Nations speech, before quickly returning to Israel.
