A large-scale analytical study revealed that consuming about 100 additional grams daily of ultra-processed foods, equivalent to about 3.5 ounces, is associated with an increased risk of several chronic diseases and death.
The study was published on September 22 in the journal Family Medicine and Community Health and included data from approximately 8.8 million adults who participated in studies conducted in various regions around the world, including the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, with follow-up periods ranging from two to 32 years.
According to the analysis results, each additional 100 grams per day of ultra-processed food consumption was linked to a 14% increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, a 4% increased risk of cancer, a 3% increased risk of death from any cause, as well as a 2% increased risk of metabolic syndrome or diabetes.
What are ultra-processed foods?
Ultra-processed foods refer to products that typically undergo intensive industrial processing and often contain additives and substances that enhance flavor, texture, or shelf life.
Examples include sugary beverages, processed meats, packaged snacks, candies, and other ready-to-eat and convenient products.
An amount of 100 grams is roughly equivalent to the size of a small bag of corn chips, a small box of candy, or a single serving of small cookie pieces, indicating that such quantities can easily accumulate throughout the day through snacks, beverages, and ready-made products.
Multiple health risks
The researchers also found that individuals who reported the highest levels of ultra-processed food consumption were more likely, compared to those who consumed less, to suffer from gastrointestinal diseases, depression or anxiety, obesity, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
The researchers, led by Xiao Liu, a cardiologist at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital in China and a researcher at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, wrote that reducing the consumption of these foods and replacing them with less processed alternatives may be important for preventing and managing chronic diseases in primary care stages.
Focusing on what is added to the diet
American nutritionist Kelly Springer, who did not participate in the study, stated that the problem does not necessarily lie in occasionally consuming these products, but rather in that their consumption should be accompanied by snacks rich in protein and fiber, such as eating apples with peanut butter, or nuts with cucumber, or preparing meals based on beans, chicken, or tuna, alongside fruits and vegetables.
She added that the focus should be on consuming foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains, rather than viewing it merely as a list of foods to be eliminated.
Springer suggested enhancing the protein and fiber content of meals and snacks, such as eating apples with peanut butter, or nuts with cucumber, or preparing meals based on beans, chicken, or tuna, alongside fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
The study does not prove causation
Despite the findings, Springer emphasized the need to interpret them cautiously, noting that the study is observational and therefore cannot prove that the consumption of ultra-processed foods directly causes the negative health outcomes observed by the researchers.
The study also relied on self-reported dietary consumption data from participants, which may leave room for the possibility of other lifestyle-related factors that the analysis could not fully control for.
However, Springer believes that the results provide an important indication of the association between high consumption of ultra-processed foods and multiple chronic health issues, supporting the importance of giving more space in the diet to whole and less processed foods.
