U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced today (Tuesday) that the United States is open to dialogue with the Iranians at the United Nations General Assembly, denying that any meeting is currently scheduled.
Rubio said on the "Today" program on NBC News: "We are open to that; I don't think there is anything scheduled at the moment, but we are certainly open to such a thing, especially if it could lead to a positive outcome and ultimately achieve the desired goal," clarifying that the goal is for Iran to never be able to possess nuclear weapons. Rubio emphasized by saying: "Simply put, they cannot."
A senior Iranian official stated today that Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts the blockade imposed on Iranian ports. The senior Iranian official said: "The United States must officially declare its desire to resolve the issue diplomatically, and then agree on a timeline to move forward in this process," indicating that the Iranian delegation participating in the United Nations General Assembly currently in New York has full authority to revive the diplomatic track with the United States.
He pointed out that Iranian President Masoud Bezhakian, who left Tehran for New York this morning, will not meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The official noted the possibility of discussing the details of an agreement to end hostilities with Washington in New York through intermediaries, stating that Tehran submitted its proposal in this regard to the U.S. side through intermediaries on September 16. The Iranian official considered the United Nations General Assembly meetings a golden opportunity to return to diplomacy but called on Washington for tangible steps.
