اختبرت كوريا الشمالية سلاحاً جديداً وصفته بأنه «فرط صوتي»، في أحدث استعراض لقدراتها العسكرية، وتعهد الزعيم كيم جونج أون بمواصلة تطوير ترسانة بلاده، مؤكداً أن السلاح الجديد سيعزز الاستعداد للحرب ويشكل «صداعاً لا علاج له» لخصومه.
وأشرف كيم، (الأحد)، على التجربة العسكرية برفقة ابنته، التي ينظر إليها على نطاق واسع باعتبارها أبرز المرشحين لخلافته، وفق ما أوردته وكالة الأنباء المركزية الكورية الرسمية. ونشرت الوكالة صوراً تظهر إطلاق صاروخ سبق أن وصفته السلطات الكورية الشمالية بأنه سلاح فرط صوتي، دون أن تكشف تفاصيل إضافية بشأن طبيعته أو خصائصه الفنية.
وتزامناً مع الإعلان الكوري الشمالي، رصد الجيش الكوري الجنوبي إطلاق صاروخين قصيري المدى من منطقة وونسان الساحلية شرقي كوريا الشمالية، بفارق نحو ثلاث ساعات. وقالت هيئة الأركان المشتركة في سيول إن الصاروخين قطعا مسافتين تقدر إحداهما بنحو 450 كيلومتراً والأخرى بنحو 600 كيلومتر قبل سقوطهما في البحر، فيما أكد الجيش الياباني أنهما سقطا خارج المنطقة الاقتصادية الخالصة لليابان.
وجاء الاختبار في ظل تصاعد التوتر بين بيونج يانج وواشنطن وحلفائهما في المنطقة، إذ اتهمت كوريا الشمالية الولايات المتحدة أخيراً بتأجيج التوتر عبر تدريبات عسكرية مشتركة مع كوريا الجنوبية واليابان قرب جزيرة جوام، جرت بين 29 أغسطس و10 سبتمبر.
وصعدت كيم يو جونج، شقيقة الزعيم الكوري الشمالي، لهجتها تجاه المناورات، محملة واشنطن مسؤولية التوتر ومؤكدة أن بيونج يانج لن تتراجع عن سياسة تعزيز قدراتها النووية.
وكانت كوريا الشمالية قد أجرت في 12 سبتمبر تدريبات واسعة شملت صواريخ ومدفعية وطائرات مسيرة، وقالت إنها أظهرت قدرة تدميرية كبيرة، فيما رجحت تقديرات أن يكون أحد أهدافها تطوير القدرة على تنفيذ هجمات متزامنة ترهق أنظمة الدفاع الجوي الكورية الجنوبية والأمريكية.
وتواصل بيونج يانج توسيع قدراتها النووية والصاروخية منذ انهيار المفاوضات بين كيم جونج أون والرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب عام 2019، وسط استمرار الجمود الدبلوماسي بشأن برنامجها النووي.
North Korea tested a new weapon it described as "hypersonic," in its latest display of military capabilities, and leader Kim Jong Un pledged to continue developing the country's arsenal, asserting that the new weapon will enhance readiness for war and create a "headache with no remedy" for his adversaries.
Kim oversaw the military test on Sunday, accompanied by his daughter, who is widely viewed as a leading candidate to succeed him, according to the official Korean Central News Agency. The agency released photos showing the launch of a missile that North Korean authorities had previously described as a hypersonic weapon, without disclosing additional details about its nature or technical characteristics.
Coinciding with the North Korean announcement, the South Korean military detected the launch of two short-range missiles from the coastal area of Wonsan in eastern North Korea, with a gap of about three hours between the launches. The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul stated that the two missiles traveled distances estimated at about 450 kilometers and about 600 kilometers before falling into the sea, while the Japanese military confirmed that they fell outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
The test came amid rising tensions between Pyongyang and Washington and their allies in the region, as North Korea recently accused the United States of fueling tensions through joint military exercises with South Korea and Japan near Guam, which took place between August 29 and September 10.
Kim Yo Jong, the sister of the North Korean leader, escalated her rhetoric regarding the maneuvers, holding Washington responsible for the tensions and asserting that Pyongyang would not back down from its policy of enhancing its nuclear capabilities.
North Korea conducted extensive drills on September 12 that included missiles, artillery, and drones, claiming they demonstrated significant destructive capability, while estimates suggested that one of their goals was to develop the ability to carry out simultaneous attacks that would overwhelm South Korean and American air defense systems.
Pyongyang continues to expand its nuclear and missile capabilities since the collapse of negotiations between Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019, amid ongoing diplomatic stalemate regarding its nuclear program.
