Russia witnessed one of the largest waves of drone attacks on Saturday evening since the start of the war with Ukraine, after Moscow announced the downing of more than 1,100 Ukrainian drones, including about 450 that were heading towards the capital, coinciding with the last day of the Russian parliamentary elections.
Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin described the attack as "unprecedented," noting damage to an oil refinery and a residential building in the capital, while the Governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, stated that the attacks resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to 20 others.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country's forces used a mix of missiles and drones, including homemade missiles, to target oil and logistics facilities within Russia.
The Russian authorities considered the attack an attempt to disrupt the electoral process, asserting that this effort had failed, while the escalation coincided with the parliamentary elections in Russia, in addition to voting in the four Ukrainian regions that Moscow declared annexed, as well as the Crimean Peninsula, in a move that Kyiv described as illegal.
In contrast, Russia continued its attacks on Ukrainian territory, as a Russian drone attack on the Kherson region resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others, while shelling in the capital Kyiv led to the deaths of a mother and her two children, before the announcement of a fourth child dying from injuries sustained.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has been developing its long-range drone capabilities and using them alongside missiles to strike targets deep within Russian territory, at a time when the war is witnessing mutual escalation on both sides.
