While Ukraine announced the success of tests for systems developed by two companies to intercept the "Shahed" jet drone, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned British Chargé d'Affaires Dana Dulakia today (Friday) and delivered a strong protest against what Moscow described as an increase in London's supplies of drones and weapons to Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the British side received a list of international obligations that Moscow believes London is violating due to its support for Ukraine, noting that it clarified to the Chargé d'Affaires the "comprehensive risks" associated with British policy towards the war.
Russia Accuses Britain of Prolonging the War
Moscow accused London of pursuing an escalatory policy that, according to them, contributes to prolonging the war and distancing the chances of reaching a political settlement, considering that continued support for Kyiv is "futile" in light of what it describes as the superiority of Russian forces and their retention of the strategic initiative on the battlefield.
The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that it reserves the right to take "necessary retaliatory measures," emphasizing that any British military facilities within Ukraine used to carry out strikes against Russian territory will be considered "legitimate targets."
Western Support for Ukraine
This diplomatic escalation comes amid ongoing Western military support for Ukraine, primarily British support that includes weapons, military equipment, and training cooperation. London views its support for Kyiv as aimed at enhancing its ability to defend itself against Russian military operations, while Moscow considers that direct Western support prolongs the war and increases the risks of escalation.
These developments coincide with continued international efforts to seek a path to settlement, at a time when Russian, Ukrainian, and Western positions remain divergent regarding the conditions for ending the war and subsequent security arrangements, while Moscow repeatedly warns that expanding military support for Kyiv could lead to further escalation between Russia and Western countries.
Developing Capabilities to Intercept "Shahed"
In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced today the success of his country in combat tests for interception systems developed by two companies to counter the "Shahed" jet drones, confirming that the systems were able to destroy enemy drones while flying at high speeds. Zelensky stated on his account on "X" that the test results represent a "success" that gives Kyiv more optimism and confidence, noting that his country is working with the two companies to complete the evaluation of the test results and accelerate the development of these systems and transition them to mass production. He clarified that negotiations are underway with the companies, and the process of signing contracts has already begun, aiming to expand the capacity to produce interception systems and use them on a larger scale to counter Russian drone attacks. The Ukrainian president emphasized that developing interception capabilities does not rely solely on technical success but also requires providing the necessary funding to accelerate and expand production. He mentioned that he discussed with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen yesterday ways to address the funding gap, adding that a new meeting will be held with her soon, while Kyiv is preparing proposals to address its financial needs related to developing defense capabilities.
