The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has allowed a key Iranian delegation to participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings scheduled in New York next week, despite the ongoing war between Washington and Tehran.
The U.S. State Department stated yesterday (Thursday) that "a key delegation from the Iranian regime" will be permitted to attend the meetings, in accordance with U.S. commitments as the host country of the United Nations headquarters. The visas include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to U.S. officials quoted by the Associated Press.
The U.S. State Department clarified that the Iranian delegation will be smaller than last year's delegation and will be subject to restrictions on movement and purchases, including a ban on purchasing luxury goods and other products, while continuing restrictions that limit the movement of its members between the United Nations headquarters, the Iranian mission, the residence of the Iranian ambassador, and the airport.
Washington's decision to allow the delegation's entry is based on its commitments under the "Headquarters Agreement" signed with the United Nations in 1947, which generally obligates the United States to facilitate the access of foreign diplomats to the international organization's headquarters, while retaining the right to deny visas for security reasons or related to terrorism or foreign policy.
This decision comes a day after the United States extended restrictions on granting visas to Palestinian officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, preventing them from attending the General Assembly meetings in person.
The participation of the Iranian delegation coincides with the ongoing war between Washington and Tehran, as New York prepares to host the General Assembly meetings, amid expectations that the war and ways to end it will dominate the agenda of discussions and diplomatic communications on the sidelines of the meetings.
