The UK Maritime Trade Operations announced today (Sunday) the evacuation of the crew of a ship that was attacked by an unknown projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, in a new incident that raises the level of security risks facing navigation in one of the world's most important maritime corridors.
The authority stated in warning number 134-26 that local authorities evacuated the ship's crew after it was struck by the projectile, explaining that the nature of the projectile and the party that launched it remain unknown. The condition of the crew members and the extent of the damage to the ship, as well as whether there are any environmental impacts from the incident, have not yet been clarified.
The authority did not disclose the name of the ship, its flag, or the nature of its cargo, nor did it specify its exact location within the strait at the time of the attack, confirming that investigations are still ongoing.
The British authority urged passing vessels in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity, at a time when no party has claimed responsibility for the attack, and there has been no immediate information about any casualties or injuries.
This incident comes days after the authority announced that two ships were struck by projectiles near Khasab in the Sultanate of Oman, in an incident that resulted in a fire on one of them.
The Strait of Hormuz is a major passage for oil and energy tankers, making any security escalation there subject to extensive international monitoring.
