While Israel informed the British consulate in East Jerusalem that it must be closed, and that the diplomats assigned there will lose their accreditation within 30 days, Britain's leadership of an initiative involving 12 countries to impose sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank has sparked political controversy and placed President Donald Trump's administration in front of a new development.
The Axios website reported that U.S. officials and Western diplomats said that the Trump administration did not object to the sanctions announced by Britain, indicating growing discontent within the White House regarding the policies of the Israeli government.
Sources indicated that U.S. officials informed their British counterparts that Washington shares London’s concerns regarding the Israeli government's policy in the West Bank, even while differing with British actions, citing U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio's stance, who did not criticize the sanctions.
The White House distanced itself from the remarks of U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who attacked the new British sanctions. According to a White House official who spoke to Axios, Huckabee's statements were not coordinated with the White House or the State Department, after he described the British decision as “discrimination against Jews” and criticized the imposition of restrictions on Israeli settlements.
Huckabee questioned in an interview with the BBC why Britain did not impose similar sanctions on other countries like North Korea, China, and Russia, while Britain already has a broad record of sanctions imposed on these countries.
Foreign ministers from 12 countries, led by Britain and Canada, stated yesterday that they would support or consider imposing restrictions on trade in goods coming from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which are deemed illegal under international law, while the British government announced a trade ban with Israeli settlements, considering that the occupied West Bank areas are experiencing “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed that his country has officially changed its position to consider, for the first time, the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories as “illegal.”
Relations between Israel and Britain have soured, and an Israeli Foreign Ministry official stated that the British consulate in East Jerusalem was informed that it must be closed, and that the diplomats assigned there will lose their accreditation within 30 days.
Informed sources said that British representatives assigned to a U.S.-led coordination mission regarding Gaza in Israel, as well as British diplomats residing in Ramallah, must leave within seven days.
