أعلن الجيش الأمريكي إسقاط أكثر من 300 طائرة مسيّرة أطلقتها عصابات مخدرات على امتداد الحدود الأمريكية مع المكسيك منذ بداية العام الحالي.
وقالت القيادة الشمالية الأمريكية «يو إس نورثكوم»، المسؤولة عن الولايات المتحدة والدول المجاورة، إن عصابات المخدرات تقف وراء إطلاق هذه الطائرات، مشيرة إلى إسقاط نحو 100 مسيّرة خلال الشهر الماضي وحده، من دون الكشف عن الجانب من الحدود الذي جرى فيه إسقاطها.
وأوضحت القيادة أن منظمات إجرامية استخدمت الطائرات المسيّرة في دعم أنشطة غير قانونية عبر الحدود، من بينها عمليات التهريب ومراقبة تحركات عناصر إنفاذ القانون والجنود.
وفي السياق ذاته، قال وزير الدفاع المكسيكي ريكاردو تريفييا إن هذه الطائرات استُخدمت بشكل رئيسي من جانب مهربي المهاجرين لرصد المواقع على امتداد الحدود التي لا تشهد وجوداً للسلطات.
وكان مكتب المدعي العام في مدينة تيخوانا المكسيكية، القريبة من الحدود الأمريكية، قد تعرض في أكتوبر الماضي لهجوم بطائرة مسيّرة محملة بالمتفجرات، من دون تسجيل خسائر بشرية.
The U.S. military announced the downing of more than 300 drones launched by drug cartels along the U.S.-Mexico border since the beginning of this year.
The U.S. Northern Command, responsible for the United States and neighboring countries, stated that drug cartels are behind the launch of these drones, noting that about 100 drones were downed just last month, without revealing which side of the border the downing occurred.
The command explained that criminal organizations have used drones to support illegal activities across the border, including smuggling operations and monitoring the movements of law enforcement and military personnel.
In this context, Mexican Defense Minister Ricardo Treviño stated that these drones have primarily been used by human traffickers to scout locations along the border that do not have a law enforcement presence.
Last October, the Attorney General's office in Tijuana, Mexico, near the U.S. border, was attacked by a drone loaded with explosives, but no casualties were reported.
