U.S. President Donald Trump described Iran today (Monday) as a "failed state," clarifying that the Iranians do not know who their leader is, and no one knows who the leader in Iran is.
Trump told reporters at the White House: Most of Iran's leaders have perished, and their naval and air forces and surveillance equipment have been largely destroyed, adding: "That doesn't mean we won't strike it... We'll see what happens."
He pointed out that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz is very good, indicating that many ships crossed the strait during the night with the help of the U.S. Navy, and that the average number of ships crossing was 30 vessels per night.
Trump mentioned that the inflation rate in Iran has reached 350%, that it has no currency, and that it does not pay its soldiers' salaries, emphasizing that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons, considering this to be the primary goal.
Trump stated: Tehran possessing nuclear weapons would threaten the existence of Israel and the Middle East, and possibly American cities.
The U.S. president linked the continued flow of oil through the strait to prices not rising to the levels some had expected, considering that his administration has done a great job in dealing with Iran and Venezuela.
In response to the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States, the U.S. president noted that his Chinese counterpart's actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz have remained relatively limited and neutral compared to what he could have done, saying: "We have a very good relationship, as you can see, and even regarding the Strait of Hormuz, his movement has remained relatively limited compared to what he could have done."
Trump expressed his respect for the Chinese president, saying: "He is a man I have great respect for. I believe he respects me, and I think he has come to respect our country."
