U.S. President Donald Trump shared a video that he claimed shows Iran's Khark Island, one of the country's main oil export centers, being subjected to devastating explosions, just hours after the U.S. and Iran exchanged military attacks for the first time since July, in a development that reflects escalating tensions between the two countries.
It was not immediately clear whether Trump's post represented a threat to target Khark Island or if he was referring to an ongoing attack, and after several hours of the video being posted, there was no evidence confirming that the island had been attacked.
Trump wrote on his platform "Truth Social": "Khark Island is being completely blown up and destroyed!!!! President Donald Trump," without providing further details.
After reviewing and verifying the accompanying video, which shows massive explosions and dramatic scenes, it is highly likely that it was generated by artificial intelligence.
According to Reuters, the White House and the U.S. Department of Defense did not immediately respond to requests for comment, nor was there an immediate response to Trump's post from Iranian media.
The Importance of Khark Island
Khark Island holds significant strategic importance for the Iranian economy, as it handled about 90% of Iran's oil exports before the outbreak of the war that began with U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28.
Targeting the island could cause major disruptions to Iran's energy trade and could impose enormous economic pressure on Tehran, given its pivotal role in oil exports.
In contrast, Iranian President Masoud Bezhkian stated that his country does not seek war but will respond firmly to any aggression.
Official media reported him saying on Monday: "We will never remain silent in the face of any aggression, and we will respond decisively to the aggressors," just before a scheduled visit to Kyrgyzstan.
Mutual Attacks and Escalation
This comes after Iran responded to a previous U.S. attack that targeted missile launch platforms on Lark Island, located about 660 kilometers east of Khark Island, by launching attacks on two U.S. bases in Jordan, according to Iranian media.
The Iranian military also announced early Monday that it targeted the Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates with a drone.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the strikes targeting U.S. bases in Jordan were in response to the attack on Lark Island, noting that those bases are used to launch and support military operations against Iran.
For its part, the Iranian military stated that the drone attack on the Emirati base targeted sites where U.S. forces and helicopters are stationed, in response to the losses resulting from the attack on Lark.
In another development, the Iranian news agency "Mehr" reported that the Revolutionary Guard used air defense missiles to shoot down a U.S. drone that crashed in the Gulf waters.
Increasing Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
The military escalation coincided with a maritime incident in the southern Strait of Hormuz, where a giant oil tanker caught fire and came to a complete stop after being hit by two naval mines, according to a statement from the Revolutionary Guard reported by Iranian state television.
The Revolutionary Guard stated that the tanker was attempting to illegally cross the waterway, but did not disclose the name of the ship or details about its crew, warning that other vessels could face the same fate if they violate the rules imposed by Iran for passage through the strait.
Last week, Trump stated that all mines in the international waters of the strait had been detonated or removed, and that Iran had been warned that any entity laying new mines in the waterway would face destruction.
While Trump repeatedly asserts that the Strait of Hormuz is open to navigation, the Revolutionary Guard's navy described these statements as "a clear lie," reiterating its position that the strait remains closed to ships that do not obtain Iranian permission.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime energy routes, through which about one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed before the war.
The escalation of security risks has led to a decrease in the number of cargo ships that can be tracked crossing the strait to about five ships daily over the weekend, according to shipping data, although the actual number may be higher, as some ships have turned off their automatic identification systems to avoid attacks.
Washington Increases Economic Pressure on Tehran
The return to hostilities came after weeks of the Trump administration intensifying efforts to pressure Iran and its trading partners through costly economic sanctions, in a relative shift away from military options.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisent stated that the United States may unveil new secondary sanctions weekly as part of its efforts to increase pressure on Tehran, explaining that banks will be the focus of the first phase.
Pisent added that Washington has begun targeting banking institutions, sending a message to banks that it is "not acceptable" to hold Iranian funds or assist the Iranian regime.
The United States imposed sanctions on Friday on Emirati branches of Bank Misr, due to what it described as alleged financial ties with Iran.
Pisent indicated that the next step could involve completely depriving a financial institution of access to the dollar-based financial system.
He said: "You will see more of these actions every week," ahead of a meeting of finance ministers and financial sector leaders from the G20.
Strike on Lark... The First Known U.S. Military Action Since July
Describing the first known U.S. military strikes since late July, an American official stated that U.S. forces targeted launch platforms on Lark Island, a small island located in the Strait of Hormuz near the strategic port of Bandar Abbas overlooking the shipping lanes at the entrance to the Gulf.
The official added that U.S. forces observed elements of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard preparing to launch missiles equipped with naval mines toward the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. Central Command stated that its forces carried out a "limited and precise action" against Revolutionary Guard forces responsible for laying mines, considering them to pose an "imminent threat" in the strait, without disclosing additional details.
In Jordan, the armed forces announced the interception of eight missiles that entered the country's airspace, while a correspondent for "Fox News" reported via the "X" platform that the forces intercepted nearly all incoming missiles.
This escalation raises concerns about the future of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a major artery for global energy trade, as the U.S. and Iran continue to exchange threats and attacks amid increasing uncertainty about the next steps.
