In a new move that escalates tensions between the United States and Canada, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to "Lake America" for official use by the U.S. government, while New York Governor Kathy Hochul quickly rejected the new name, affirming that her state would not use it.
Under the decision, the U.S. Geological Survey has begun procedures to update the name in its official electronic documents, and the change has been entered into the Geographic Names Information System, with the new name expected to gradually appear in printed documents over the coming days.
Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes in North America and is the smallest in terms of area, located between the U.S. state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.
U.S. Geological Survey Director Ned Mamola stated in a message published by Trump that the agency has adopted the new name in its official electronic documents, confirming that it is being included in printed documents.
Objections were not limited to the Canadian side, as Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul rejected the decision, affirming that her state would not adopt the name "Lake America."
Hochul's stance came amid broader criticisms of Trump's trade policies towards Canada, as she accused the U.S. president of "treating allies as enemies," considering that the trade war is harming American families.
New York's position is particularly significant, as the state directly overlooks Lake Ontario from the U.S. side, while the Canadian province of the same name is located on the northern shore of the lake.
Canada Sticks to "Lake Ontario"
On the other side, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, affirming that Canada will continue to use the historical name of the lake.
Canadian officials also criticized the move, pointing out that the new name is a unilateral American decision and that Trump does not have the authority to compel the Canadian government or international entities to use it. Reports confirmed that the executive order is limited to federal U.S. use of the name.
Thus, the lake may bear a different name in U.S. government documents and maps than the name used in Canada, opening the door to an unusual case of dual naming for a geographical feature located on the border between the two countries.
Why Did Trump Change the Lake's Name?
The decision came amid escalating trade disputes between Washington and Ottawa, following the collapse of trade negotiations between the two countries, and rising tariffs and retaliatory measures.
Trump had first proposed the idea of changing the name of Lake Ontario earlier in the week, directly linking the move to trade disputes with Canada and the province of Ontario.
The decision also falls within a broader policy adopted by the Trump administration to rename American geographical features; the U.S. president had previously issued a decision in 2025 to rename the Gulf of Mexico in U.S. government use to "Gulf of America."
