وقال المتحدث باسم الكرملين دميتري بيسكوف لصحيفة «واشنطن بوست»: إن راتكليف جاء إلى موسكو؛ لإجراء اتصالات بين الأجهزة الأمنية في البلدين، وأضاف لوسائل الإعلام الروسية، اليوم (الأربعاء)، أن راتكليف لم يلتقِ بالرئيس الروسي فلاديمير بوتين، ولم يكشف أي تفاصيل بشأن المحادثات.
وكان المتحدث باسم الكرملين قال، أمس (الثلاثاء)، إنه لا علم لديه بشأن زيارة راتكليف، وذلك بعد هبوط طائرة عسكرية أمريكية في موسكو.
وسخر معلقون روس من تصريح المتحدث باسم الكرملين بعد انتشار صور الطائرة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، متسائلين كيف يمكن لطائرة تقل مدير وكالة الاستخبارات المركزية الأمريكية أن تصل إلى العاصمة الروسية دون علم الكرملين.
ومن المرجح أن تكون هذه أول زيارة لراتكليف إلى موسكو منذ توليه منصب مدير وكالة الاستخبارات المركزية الأمريكية.
وزار سلفه ويليام بيرنز روسيا عام 2021 بناء على طلب الرئيس الأمريكي السابق جو بايدن، والتقى الرئيس بوتين في مسعى للحيلولة دون تصعيد التوتر بشأن أوكرانيا. ولم تُكشف التفاصيل بشأن الغرض من زيارة راتكليف الأخيرة. وتتردد تكهنات واسعة النطاق بأنه ربما يسعى إلى تحذير روسيا من مغبة مزيد من التصعيد للحرب في أوكرانيا.
The Kremlin announced that the Director of the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), John Ratcliffe, has arrived in Moscow to hold talks with officials from Russian intelligence agencies.
Spokesman for the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov, told the Washington Post that Ratcliffe came to Moscow to conduct communications between the security agencies of the two countries. He added to Russian media today (Wednesday) that Ratcliffe did not meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and did not disclose any details regarding the discussions.
Yesterday (Tuesday), the Kremlin spokesman stated that he had no knowledge of Ratcliffe's visit, following the landing of a U.S. military aircraft in Moscow.
Russian commentators mocked the Kremlin spokesman's statement after images of the aircraft circulated on social media, questioning how a plane carrying the Director of the CIA could arrive in the Russian capital without the Kremlin's knowledge.
This is likely to be Ratcliffe's first visit to Moscow since he took office as the Director of the CIA.
His predecessor, William Burns, visited Russia in 2021 at the request of former President Joe Biden and met with President Putin in an effort to prevent escalating tensions over Ukraine. Details regarding the purpose of Ratcliffe's recent visit have not been disclosed. There is widespread speculation that he may be seeking to warn Russia against further escalation of the war in Ukraine.
