The Israeli police prevented the holding of a conference related to the Palestinian Authority in the Old City of Jerusalem, considering that organizing it violates the law and could lead to "incitement and heightened tension" in the city, according to an official statement.
The police stated that its forces thwarted the conference after the central unit in the Jerusalem district, through intelligence activity, detected preparations for an event inside one of the complexes in the Old City, indicating that the event was related to the Palestinian Authority.
According to the police, the information collected was presented to the police commissioner, the commander of the Jerusalem district, and Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who signed an order prohibiting the holding of the event, based on what the police described as the "Application Law."
It added that elements from the undercover police and forces from the "David" Directorate of the Jerusalem district went to the conference site, where they observed the preparations and a number of people present, informing them of the order prohibiting the holding of the event, which led to the cancellation of the conference and its prevention from taking place.
The Israeli police justified the action as part of what it described as efforts to enhance "Israeli sovereignty" in Jerusalem and its eastern parts, and to prevent events related to the Palestinian Authority in the city, claiming that they could contribute to incitement and tension and affect the "fabric of life" in Jerusalem.
Israel's basis for preventing the activities of the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem relies on legislation and legal procedures it has been applying for years, as it prohibits the Authority from conducting political or official activities in the city without Israeli approval, as part of its stance that considers Jerusalem its united capital.
In contrast, the Palestinian Authority considers East Jerusalem part of the occupied Palestinian territories and insists on it as the capital of its future state, rejecting Israeli measures aimed at imposing sovereignty over the eastern part of the city.
This incident comes amid ongoing Israeli restrictions on Palestinian activities and events in East Jerusalem, which has seen the prevention of several events and conferences related to the Palestinian Authority in recent years, amid a continuing dispute over the legal and political status of the city and its future.
The status of Jerusalem is one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as Israel occupied East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and then declared its annexation in a move that is not widely recognized by the international community, while the Palestinian leadership insists on establishing an independent state on the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel in 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
