في خطوة جديدة قد تزيد التوتر بين واشنطن وبكين، عبرت طائرة دورية واستطلاع تابعة للبحرية الأمريكية مضيق تايوان، (الجمعة)، في أجواء دولية، فيما أعلن الجيش الصيني أنه تابع تحركات الطائرة وراقبها طوال عملية العبور، مؤكداً أن الوضع كان تحت السيطرة.
وقالت الأسطول السابع الأمريكي إن طائرة P-8A بوسيدون نفذت عملية العبور وفقاً للقانون الدولي، معتبرة أن الخطوة تؤكد التزام الولايات المتحدة بمنطقة المحيطين الهندي والهادئ الحرة والمفتوحة.
وأضاف الأسطول السابع، في بيان، أن الولايات المتحدة تحافظ من خلال عملياتها في مضيق تايوان على حقوق وحرية الملاحة لجميع الدول، مشددة على أن القوات الأمريكية تواصل التحليق والإبحار والعمل في أي مكان يسمح به القانون الدولي.
في المقابل، ذكرت صحيفة «جلوبال تايمز» الصينية، نقلاً عن مصدر عسكري، أن الجيش الصيني تعقب طائرة الدورية والاستطلاع الأمريكية وراقبها طوال فترة عبورها للمضيق، مشيرة إلى أن «الوضع كان تحت السيطرة».
وتنفذ القوات الأمريكية عمليات عبور للمضيق كل بضعة أشهر، سواء بواسطة سفن حربية أو طائرات عسكرية، في خطوة تثير غضب بكين التي تعتبر تايوان جزءاً من أراضيها وتؤكد أن لها السيادة والاختصاص على المضيق.
وتقول الولايات المتحدة وتايوان إن مضيق تايوان ممر مائي دولي، فيما ترفض تايبيه مطالب بكين بالسيادة عليها، مؤكدة أن مستقبل الجزيرة يحدده شعبها وحده.
وتأتي الخطوة الأمريكية في وقت تسعى فيه واشنطن وبكين إلى تهدئة العلاقات المتوترة بين البلدين، وسط خلافات متعلقة بتايوان والتجارة والقيود المفروضة على التكنولوجيا.
ومن المتوقع أن يزور الرئيس الصيني شي جين بينغ الولايات المتحدة الشهر القادم، للقاء الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب، في إطار جهود تهدف إلى تحقيق قدر من الاستقرار في العلاقات بين أكبر قوتين اقتصاديتين في العالم.
وتعد قضية تايوان من أكثر الملفات حساسية في العلاقات الأمريكية الصينية، إذ تؤكد بكين مراراً أن الجزيرة تمثل شأناً داخلياً صينياً و«خطاً أحمر» لا ينبغي تجاوزه، بينما ترفض تايوان هذه المطالب وتتمسك بحقها في تقرير مستقبلها.
In a new step that may increase tensions between Washington and Beijing, a U.S. Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait on Friday, in international airspace, while the Chinese military announced that it tracked the aircraft's movements and monitored it throughout the crossing, confirming that the situation was under control.
The U.S. Seventh Fleet stated that the P-8A Poseidon aircraft conducted the crossing in accordance with international law, considering that the move reaffirms the United States' commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
The Seventh Fleet added in a statement that the United States, through its operations in the Taiwan Strait, maintains the rights and freedom of navigation for all countries, emphasizing that U.S. forces continue to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows.
In contrast, the Chinese newspaper "Global Times," citing a military source, reported that the Chinese military tracked the U.S. surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft and monitored it throughout its crossing of the strait, noting that "the situation was under control."
U.S. forces conduct crossing operations in the strait every few months, whether by warships or military aircraft, a move that provokes anger in Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory and asserts its sovereignty and jurisdiction over the strait.
The United States and Taiwan assert that the Taiwan Strait is an international waterway, while Taipei rejects Beijing's claims of sovereignty over it, affirming that the future of the island is determined solely by its people.
This U.S. action comes at a time when Washington and Beijing are seeking to ease the strained relations between the two countries, amid disputes related to Taiwan, trade, and technology restrictions.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the United States next month to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, as part of efforts aimed at achieving some stability in the relations between the world's two largest economies.
The Taiwan issue is one of the most sensitive files in U.S.-China relations, as Beijing repeatedly asserts that the island represents a domestic Chinese matter and a "red line" that should not be crossed, while Taiwan rejects these claims and insists on its right to determine its own future.
